Joseph A. Atencio, known affectionately as Joe, passed away peacefully in his home on August 17, 2024, at the age of 88 in Omaha, NE. He was born on November 18, 1935, in San Luis, CO, where Spanish was his first language.

Joe served honorably as an Airmen First Class in the Air Force for four years, dedicating himself to his duties with commitment and pride. Following his military service, he pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in education from Adam State and a Masters in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO).

Joe had a distinguished career as a Junior High math teacher, shaping young minds in Albuquerque, NM, and Omaha, NE, for over 30 years. His dedication to education and his ability to inspire his students left a lasting impact on countless individuals.

He was a devout member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he participated actively in the community. Joe found great solace and joy in his faith, which guided him throughout his life.

In his spare time, Joe was an avid reader and enjoyed challenging himself with crossword and jigsaw puzzles, activities that kept his mind sharp and engaged. He also loved spending time with his family, surrounded by his grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughters, Jennifer (Kyle) Haffey and Sarah Trader; grandchildren, Micaela, Jack, Benjamin, Isabella, and Cora. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers; sisters; two grandchildren; son-in-law, CJ Trader; and several wonderful dogs.

His legacy of kindness, dedication, and service will be remembered by all who knew him.

VISITATION: Wednesday, August 21st from 5pm to 7pm at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 14330 Eagle Run Drive, followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm.  MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Thursday, August 22nd at 10:30am, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.  Interment, Resurrection Cemetery.
