Joseph D. Byers
June 27, 1951 – April 25, 2020
Joseph “Joe” Byers of Juno Beach, Florida, passed unexpectedly at age 68 on April 25, 2020. He was born in Missouri, the third of four brothers, to parents, Jack and Patricia Byers, who both preceded him in death.
Joe graduated from Ruskin High School in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1969. He married Vicky Byers, formerly of Otsego, Michigan, in 1975. Joe always had grit and an entrepreneurial spirit, even as a very young man. He and Vicky owned and operated several auto parts stores in Michigan in the 1980s. He then went back to college and completed his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, class of 1988. In the 1990s he went on to start a software company with his wife, his brothers, Mark and Ron, and sisters-in-law, Janet and Sandy. This small start-up became his life’s work and passion, growing into a company that eventually involved all his brothers and many other members of his family, including his son and grandson. Joe was proud of his relationships with employees and colleagues, many of whom became his closest friends. He was always especially proud that DSS, Inc. is focused on service to Veterans.
Joe will be remembered by all as a hardworking family man. Never one to be idle, Joe relished his work and found joy in his off time by gathering with family and friends, cruising on his boat and doting on his grandchildren. He was an avid reader. When Joe picked a book up, he usually kept reading until it was finished. He never liked to leave a task incomplete. In recent years, Joe and Vicky enjoyed spending their summers with family on the lake.
Survived by wife, Vicky; children: Christopher (Andrea), Mandy (Matthew) and Jodey (Michael); grandchildren: Hannah, Aden, Leah, Anna and Martha; brothers: Ronald (Sandy), Mark (Janet) and Gary (Linda); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws with whom he has remained close over the years.
FUNERAL SERVICE: Saturday, October 2nd at 11am at West Center Chapel. Interment: Evergreen Memorial Park.
