Joseph G. “Joe” Engelbert

Joseph G. “Joe” Engelbert

11/4/1944 – 9/17/2024

Joseph “Joe” George Engelbert, age 79, was surrounded by love and thoughtful gestures of family, friends, and staff in his last days and hours of his earthly life.

Joe Engelbert, the youngest of six children, was born to Antonia “Mary” and Joseph Engelbert on November 4, 1944, in Madison County. He attended St. Bernard Elementary School and graduated from Lindsay Holy Family High School in 1963. Before earning a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Joe served his country proudly in the Army for two years.

Joe and Judy were united in marriage on May 24, 1969 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Tarnov and were blessed with 4 children. Joe was the Sr. Vice President and Controller at Bozell, Jacobs, Kenyon & Eckhardt, an advertising firm, for his entire career. His love for his profession was evident as he enjoyed critiquing commercials throughout his life.

As a lifelong parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine parish, he was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, participated in the nocturnal adoration program, and served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.

His vast interests involved coaching and supporting his children in soccer, traveling, horse-racing, off-track betting, playing numerous card games, supporting the Jays and Huskers, and golfing at Shadow Ridge. Annual Engelbert golf outings, Christmas parties, and family visits instilled in his children the importance of family.

Joe left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His way with words, instilling confidence and offering assistance, touched so many hearts. Joe’s genial personality, dedication to his family and friends, and faith in action have made a lasting impact on so many.

Joe and Judy faced Joe’s kidney failure with strength and faith. Joe had a successful kidney transplant thanks to his selfless wife in 2009. Later, he bravely faced dialysis and other challenges before entering his eternal home in heaven.

Preceded in death by his son, Chris; granddaughter, Colette Haskell; brother, Gerry Engelbert; sister-in-law, Jeanie Laakman; niece, Deanna Engelbert; parents, Antonia and Joseph; mother-in-law, Edomina Pinger; father-in-law, Norbert Pinger; niece-in-law, Suzie Korth.

Survived by wife of 55 years, Judy; children: Brian (Daniella), Kimberly Gates (Lonnie), Kelly Haskell (Paul); daughter-in-law, Dana Engelbert; 14 grandchildren, Emma and Zoe Engelbert; Sienna and Luna Engelbert; Peter, Andrew, Anthony, John, Kathryn, and Sophie Gates; Connor, Callan, Noelle, and Monroe Haskell; brothers and sister, Ted (Margie), Mary Ann Korth (Alvin),   sister-in-law, Kathy Engelbert, Jack (Arlene), Gene (Janice); many other loving family members and friends.

“When a Christian carries out with love the most insignificant everyday action, that action overflows with the transcendence of God…the Christian vocation consists in making heroic verse out of the prose of each day. Heaven and earth seem to merge, my children, on the horizon. But where they really meet is in your hearts when you sanctify your everyday lives.”

~St. Josemaria Escriva

I will always have fond memories of Uncle Joe. (Not really my uncle, but that’s what the kids called him, and it stuck.) Quick witted, a gentleman, and a hoot to be around. One of the few people for whom I would wear my hearing aids, so I wouldn’t miss what he had to say. Never once called me by my real name. Earlier this week, heaven became just a little bit better place. Bob (aka Scallywag… and a few others I can’t repeat.)

He was obviously a wonderful man from a wonderful family. Many of whom I knew! He will be missed but not forgotten.

My sincere condolences to Judy and your family on the loss of Joe. He was a wonderful man. I worked with Joe at Bozell and True North. He was a great mentor and role model. I always appreciated his wisdom and enjoyed his laughter. He was a great leader and a true friend. I will always remember him.
