ELSON, Josephine Jo Josephine Jo Elson died on December 29, 2012. She was the youngest of four daughters born to Theda Lena (Behrens) and Charles Duering of Upland, Nebraska. She and her sisters received all their grade and high school education in the Upland Public School and all graduated with honors. They all received their degrees from Kearney State College with the aid of scholastic scholarships. During World War II, Jo extended her education by taking courses in engineering at the University of Colorado and then worked in the Flight Test Department of Boeing Aircraft in Seattle as a flight analyst. Later she joined the American Red Cross and was assigned duties around Washington, D. C. and in the Philippine Islands. It was near Manilla, P.I., that she met her future husband, Captain Kenneth H. Elson. After returning to the States, they were married in Lincoln, Nebraska. While her husband attended law school at the University of Nebraska, Jo worked as a cartographer for the Department of Agriculture. The couple lived in Grand Island since 1949, and after their two sons were in college, Jo worked for more than 35 years for her husband as a legal secretary. She enjoyed many hobbies, music, art, taking art classes and especially volunteering and traveling. She and her husband traveled the world. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth H. Elson, and her sisters, Edna Drake, Katherine Sanders, Charlotte Keim. She is survived by Dr. Kenneth H. Elson, Jr. and Dr. Joel D. Elson, sons; Debbie Elson and Brenda Elson, daughters-in-law; and grandchildren, Amy Jean Elson, Michelle Jo Elson, Joel Scott Elson, and John Christian Elson. Memorials are suggested to The American Red Cross, The Grand Island Public Library or charity of choice. At Jo’s request there will be no visitation or services.
