Josephine was among the first generation of Sicilians born in Omaha, Nebraska.  She was born in the family home on January 24, 1923, to parents Alfia and Carmello Morello.  She was the oldest of three daughters, which included Mary and Nellie.  Attended Kellom Elementary School and Omaha Tech High School.  Upon graduation, Jo worked for Farmers Mutual of Omaha.  When she was 30 years old, she married John “Jack” Fitzgibbons, a man 6 years her junior, on June 6, 1953.  She was (and remained) ahead of her time by marrying a man so young.

In March of 1954, they welcomed their daughter Geradette Marie into the world.  In early May of 1955, she lost her son (unnamed) at 5 months pregnant.  In late May of 1955, she lost her husband to an automobile accident.  Being a strong-willed woman, she persevered.  She entered the workforce full time, learned to drive, and raised their daughter with the help of her parents.  She retired from Mutual after 29 years and lived an astounding 35 years more.

Survived by daughter, Geradette Geveshausen (Dan); granddaughters, Nikki Geveshausen, Anni Chlopek (Marc); great-grandchildren: Eleanor (7), Shay (3), Jethro (2), Hudson (8 months); 41 beloved nieces and nephews; cherished friends.

I was saddened to read about the recent loss of your mother. She was a strong and loving woman and was always nice to me. We are keeping you and your family in our thoughts at this time. All the best, Pat and Mary Sweaney

So sorry to hear of Jo’s passing. Still think about her every time I pass her former house on 93rd Street. Jo was a friend of my mom, and I remember her so well from when I was a kid and cut the Morello’s grass on 34th Street. Great independent lady. Rest In Peace
