Joyce Marie (Grayson) Bunjer was born on October 26, 1928, in Lennox, South Dakota. She was the youngest of three children of Joshua and Tilea Grayson, with older sisters, LaVerne and Yvonnie.
Joyce attended Lennox Public Schools where she was very active in music, playing the cello and singing in various vocal groups. As editor of the high school newspaper, Joyce enjoyed journalism. She met her husband, Al Bunjer, while in high school; they were married on May 30, 1947, when Al returned from serving in WWII and while Joyce was a student at Sioux Falls College.
Joyce and Al had three sons: Verl (Nancy), Gary (Sue), and Dennis (Rogene). Eventually the couple enjoyed their role as grandparents of eight and great-grandparents of nineteen.
Besides being a sports fan, particularly of Husker sports, Joyce also enjoyed baseball involving her family and the Kansas City Royals. She and Al also stayed very busy during their later years, buying and selling antiques, particularly furniture.
Joyce was an active lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She grew up at Ebenezer Presbyterian in Lennox, but follow marriage, she was a member of Grace Presbyterian in Council Bluffs, First Presbyterian in Sioux City, Hope Presbyterian in Millard, and finally, West Hills in Omaha. Besides being active in her church, Joyce particularly enjoyed small group Bible study at every location.
