Julie E. Hertzler

Julie E. Hertzler

June 24, 1947 – February 21, 2024

Julie E. Hertzler passed peacefully at her home in the presence of her three sons on February 21, 2024, after a 3 ½ year battle with cancer.

Julie Ellen Sivers was born on June 24, 1947, in Council Bluffs and was raised in Oakland, IA, the oldest daughter of Harry E. and Madeline E. (Wright) Sivers who were long time farmers in the area.  She graduated from Oakland High School in 1965 where she played basketball and saxophone, and from Drake University in 1969 with a BA in Medical Technology.  She took employment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where she met her partner in life, Jerrad “Jerry” Hertzler who was a neurological resident.  Julie and Jerry were married on January 17, 1970, and moved to Houston where Jerry joined a neurology practice and Julie worked as a medical technologist.  In 1972 they moved to Omaha where they would remain for life.  Their oldest son, John, was born in 1973, followed by Bradley in 1976 and Matthew in 1977.  Soon after arriving in Omaha, Julie and Jerry joined Dundee Presbyterian Church where they were lifelong members, and Julie became involved in the community as a volunteer in numerous nonprofit organizations.  Julie was involved in Bible Study Fellowship for 14 years where she was an adult and children’s leader and substitute teaching leader.  She led a women’s Bible study at Dundee for many years and was involved in prayer ministry as well as youth and various leadership positions.  Julie had a deep and abiding faith that was an example to so many others and the center of her life.  She considered her occupation to be wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, volunteer, and servant of her savior Jesus Christ.  Julie was a Master Gardener through the Nebraska County Extension and loved being active and outside doing anything–running, walking, biking, kayaking, hiking and caring for her perfectly landscaped yard.  Most of all, Julie loved her family and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  Julie truly appreciated the love, care, prayer and support of family, many friends, doctors, nurses, and caregivers as she walked the cancer journey.

Julie is survived by her sons: John (Susan) of Omaha, Bradley (Allison) of Scottsbluff, NE and Matthew (Kyle) of Castle Rock, CO; grandchildren: Madeline, William and Jerrad (John and Susan), Havelah, Hannah and Harriet (Brad and Allison), and Nathaniel and Levi (Matt and Kyle); sister, Emily (Daniel) of Dellwood, MN; nieces and nephews: Alicia Petersen (Christopher), Mason Gatto (Noelle), Scott Powell (Gwen) and Jeff Powell (Kristen).

A Memorial service will be held on March 8, 2024, at 1:00pm at Dundee Presbyterian Church with a reception at the church to follow.

Livestream of the service will be available on our website or click here:  https://heafeyheafey.com/live-cast/

My heart is broken for the Hertzler family and all of Julie’s friends. She made a big impact in this world and will never be forgotten. Every time I think of Julie, I think of her laughing and I am thankful that she was a part of my life. Sending sympathies. Kathy

Please accept my most sincere sympathy on the Homegoing of Julie. There is so much rejoicing with her there! I met her at Bible Study Fellowship, and God used her so well as a leader. She was always ready no matter the task. God bless all of her family and take to heart all that she taught you throughout her life on earth. Blessings to you all, Sharon
