RUSSELL, June H., Jul 30, 1921 Feb 6, 2010. June grew up in Topeka, KS. Her parents were Roy F. and Bessie B. Hammett. She was blessed with many talents, especially in music. She attended the University of Kansas, where she earned a degree in Public School Music in 1943. Following a year as Director of Music at the Platte City, MO High School, she moved to New York City to further her music career. There she became a singer in the cast of a Broadway musical, Mexican Hayride, and also sang with the Robert Shaw Chorale and the Fred Waring “Pennsylvanians.” In 1945 she joined a USO troop that toured many military bases in the Pacific Islands. Following her 1946 marriage to Laurie Russell, she lived in the Prairie Village, KS area until 1963 when the family moved to Omaha, NE. In Omaha, June was active in the Emmy Gifford Childrens Theater and Young Matrons Club. She was Nebraska State President of the General Federation of Women Club, 1992-1993. She is survived by husband, Laurie R. Russell; daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Robert Zimmerman of Lenexa, KS; sons and daughter-in-law: Stuart H. and Laurie Russell of Wheaton, IL, Frank B. Russell of Kula, HI; grandchildren: Russell Zimmerman, Janna Zimmerman, Cara Wagner, William Russell and Charles Russell; great-grandchild, Miranda June Zimmerman. SERVICES Friday, 11am, Countryside Community Church, 8787 Pacific St. GRAVESIDE SERVICE Saturday, 2pm, Johnson County Memorial Gardens in Overland Park, KS. VISITATION from 2pm Thursday, with family receiving friends 6pm-8pm at the West Center Chapel. Memorials are suggested to Countryside Community Church.
