Justin Lynn Cooper

February 7, 1970 – August 12, 2024

Justin Lynn Cooper, also known as Ian McCain in the radio industry, a beloved son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend left this world on August 12, 2024 and the age of fifty-four, after a brief illness.

Justin was born February 7, 1970, to Jeanne Strain, and was raised in Omaha, Nebraska, graduating from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1988. While also a talented athlete in tennis and basketball, Justin soon developed an interest in broadcasting and journalism, participating in several high school clubs and organizations.

Justin discovered his passion for radio when he got involved at underground radio station KRCK, then the only alternative rock station in the Omaha area. He would go on make a name for himself at 101.9 The Edge (KJDE) and go on to work at other radio stations across the country including WKQX and AOL Music (Chicago, Illinois), KKNB-KSLI (Lincoln, Nebraska), KMYZ (Tulsa, Oklahoma), KJQN (Salt Lake City, Utah) Saga Communications (Des Moines, Iowa) and KNRX (Kansas City, Missouri).

Ultimately, Justin found his home at WLUM-FM102/1 (Milwaukee Radio Alliance) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2011. During his career at WLUM, he served as Assistant Program Director, Digital Director, and air talent during the 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM drive time. He also helped organize concerts and festivals, representing FM102/1 at Summerfest and Lollapalooza among many others.

Justin, Ian, or however you knew him, left an indelible mark and legacy on the alternative rock scene and radio industry, both in Milwaukee and across the United States. His passion for music was evident in his dedication to local bands and musicians. He cared for everyone individually and had a unique connection with everyone. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and the radio industry.

Justin Cooper was preceded in death by his grandparents: Clarence and Evelyn Strain, and Louis and Josephine Maida. He is survived by his parents, Tony and Jeanne Maida; sister, Angela Kramer (Laurent Roy); brothers, Tony (Sharon) Maida and Carl Maida; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Family will receive friends on Friday, August 30th, from 4-6PM at West Center Chapel, with a Funeral Service at 6PM.

We went our separate ways 35 years ago and haven’t spoken since but still I feel a great loss with your passing Justin. I am greatly saddened. Your joy and happiness with music will follow you to the afterlife. Our friendship was brief, but it impacted my entire existence since.
    Thank you my friend
