Catherine Ann “Katie” Mullen passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on March 20th surrounded by her loving family at the age of 67. Katie was born on June 18, 1957, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Ruth Kalamaja Hogan and Dennis P. Hogan, Jr. She grew up in Omaha and attended Archbishop Ryan High School. After graduation, Katie studied business and graduated from Creighton University with a degree in business administration. She met her future husband, Sean Mullen, at Creighton and a friendly relationship blossomed. They married on May 29, 1982, and shared 42 beautiful years together raising eight children who will carry forward her love, kindness and giving.

Katie had boundless energy with which she loved and supported her countless friends and ever-growing family. She was always upbeat and kind to all. She was the first to offer help when someone was in need and never asked for anything in return. There was always room for one more at her house and her table. Katie was committed to a life of giving, and she had many gifts to give. Whether it was the Sunday night dinner she hosted every week for her family and grandkids, the holidays, or the annual family reunion she referred to as “Mullen Family Fun Weekend”, she will be remembered as someone who lived to serve her family and loved ones. She was also willing to share her love for Creighton Basketball with anyone willing to listen. Along with her husband Sean, she spent a lifetime in support of the Catholic Church and its teachings. She lived and taught by example. She was a role model to her children and grandchildren, her family and friends. She will be missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Molly Searl. She leaves behind her husband Sean, daughter Emily (Craig Wurtz), sons Tyler (Laura), Connor (Alyssa), Parker (Anna), Pete (Hilary), Trevor, Foster (Maura) and Spencer, grandchildren Charlie, Cal, Hazel, Claire, Max, Halle, Tate, Marlowe, Hank, Scottie, Vivian and Amelia Mullen (and one yet to arrive).

While there are too many friends to name, the family wants to especially thank all of the Hogans, Greenwoods, Searls, Mullens, Doyles and Slugockis, and everyone who has prayed for the family in this time of need.

I’m heartbroken that I’ve lost someone that I consider one of my very best friends. Our brains and thoughts connected on so many levels. What a great friend.
I can not even imagine what you are going through Sean… much less your kids. We will pray for the peace of the family.
May the warm memories of her sweeten the time going forward.

I remember when my dog was herding her kids in my parents yard and she was running around in a circle with them all… We all thought that was so funny… And also her son Trevor had become friends with my younger sister because they were both very close in age so they would often play together outside in the yard… Just a few memories that I have of her family and mine and the most recent of her was Katie being at my sisters baby shower in Omaha…

We are simply stunned by Katie’s passing. Every moment spent in Katie’s presence included the warmest, most genuine smile, friendly, fun nature and a sense of calm. One cherished memory is that she shared her recipe for marshmallow surprises which remains a family favorite. Tyler was a good friend to Jordan and a wonderful example of what his parents taught him to be, as is the case with all of the Mullen children. Katie and the entire family will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

  • Heidi Hammond Posted March 25, 2025 4:25 pm

Hello! You may, or may not remember me, but I am Heidi (Havel) Hammond, and I nannied for your 8 children when I was in college! Katie was so very kind, and was so involved. She always had everything organized, made sure kids got to where they needed, and always made sure the kids were occupied with fun activities (which is where I came in)!!! I have thought about your family a lot over the years, and always wondered if they remembered me – many of them were much younger. We had a lot of adventures at home, the zoo, and children’s museum! Katie definitely was super mom, and I’m sure she is the same as grandma. I am so sorry for your loss of an amazing mom, grandma, and woman! ❤️🙏❤️ It is nice to have to peace to know she is with our Father now, but we can’t help but miss her here on Earth! Take care.

Sudden loss of a loved one is always hard. The Lord called on Katie to make a difference here, and so she did. Now, he has called her to heaven where she will be able to look upon what she has done, watching her love on earth as it grows. God’s Love to all who were touched by Katie.
