Kimberly M. Ohr

Kimberly M. Ohr

April 8, 1942-August 13, 2024

Kimberly Myungja Ohr was born on 8 April 1942 in Hwangju-county, Hwanghae-province, present-day North Korea.  She escaped during the Korean War to the South and settled in Busan.  She eventually made her way to Seoul, where she met Jason in 1965 and graduated from Seoul National University in 1966 with a degree in Botany.  Her next journey took her across the Pacific and over most of the North America to Boston, where she married Jason in 1967.  After the birth of Eugene and Clara, the family moved to Omaha in 1972, which would become home for the next 52 years.  After setting her kids on the right track in school, Kimberly earned her master’s degree in Plant Ecology from the University of Nebraska, Omaha in 1980.  She subsequently worked as a substitute teacher within the Omaha Public Schools and eventually secured a Nebraska real estate license.

Kimberly was blessed that she was eventually able to locate her siblings who were left behind in North Korea during the chaos of war.  She reunited with them over multiple visits between 1991 and 2016.

Kimberly immersed herself in many facets of the Omaha community, from her church at St. Luke United Methodist, leadership in the Omaha Symphony Guild and the Korean Association of Nebraska, and volunteering as a Korean language translator for the Douglas County Court System.  She also served as a cultural ambassador for several local families who had adopted Korean children.

After sending her kids off to college, Kimberly embraced a new life to the fullest.  She enjoyed traveling and visited 43 states and 46 countries.  She was also an avid fan of classical music and enjoyed decades of concerts as a season subscriber to the Omaha Symphony with Jason.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jason T. Ohr, M.D.; her two children, Eugene and Clara; her daughter-in-law Catherine; and her two grandchildren, Isabella and Olivia.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Omaha Public Schools Foundation, the Omaha Symphony, or KVNO Omaha’s Classical Radio.

Our heart reaches out to the beloved family. She was always welcoming our family and has shown us what the real courage and love in life was. She silently helped many in need with great generosity and selflessness!! So many inspiring stories we come to know from her many medical mission trips to North Korea. Her legacy will remain in our hearts for a long time to come.

We had the pleasure of living directly across the street from Kimberly, Jason, Eugene, and Clara for many years in Trendwood. They were all very talented and terrific neighbors. She will be greatly missed. To her wonderful family, enjoy the great memories.

Kimberly was an intelligent caring person who was always most concerned about her family. She was a joy to be around. I pray that her lasting memories comfort Jason and all her family at this time.
