Larry D. Nelson
October 22, 1947 – April 8, 2025
Larry was born and raised in Salt Lake City, UT where he attended school and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Utah. During his time at university and following he was active in the Army Reserves and was proud to serve our country. He later earned his Master’s Degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – Boston.
Starting his career with Union Pacific in high school, he later was Railroad Director of Operations, transferred to Omaha, NE where he married Leisia Nelson. Larry’s family includes Michael Nelson and his wife, Megan, along with their children, Priscilla, Samantha and Zachary; Stephanie Harrington and her children, Jacob and Regan; Jamie Nelson and his wife, Angie, with their children, Nathan and Clara; and Jill Korte, her husband, Christopher, and their children, Benjamin and Delaney.
After decades at Union Pacific Railroad, Larry then went on to other executive positions in several industries including sales, business development, acquisitions and mergers, and real estate. In Larry’s free time he enjoyed time with grandkids, CWS games, and traveling.
Larry always knew how to make someone laugh. He knew how to make the best out of the worst situation. He was witty, liked to make jokes and was always there when you needed him. Family remember him as a joy to be around and his love for trains, his dogs, sailboats, and baseball hats. He is known as a fun-loving man who never slowed down even when he was told to. His friends and family recall fun memories with him such as going on an America’s Cup’s cruise, trying local beers, wine tasting, and talking to anyone who would listen about trains.
