Laurene McGaughey

McGaughey, Laurene Aug 23, 1943 – Oct 16, 2013 Age 70. Laurene Rae Anderson was born on August 23, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas to Laurence and Grace Anderson. Laurene loved the Lord and was a devoted mother to her three daughters and her three stepdaughters. And how she loved her 16 grandchildren! She was a graduate of Wichita East High School and Midland Lutheran College, where she earned her Bachelor’s in education and music. Her marriage to Kent Eakins in 1965 produced three daughters: Julie Renae, Jenny Karlene, and Allene Elise. Laurene was a lifelong lover of music and began piano lessons at age 7. Organ studies began at age 15 and continued through college. She served as a church organist for 44 years and a piano teacher for 25 years. At Lutheran Church of the Master in Omaha, in addition to serving as principal organist, she was Music and Worship Coordinator for 10 years, directed children’s and hand bell choirs, and accompanied the Master’s Men’s Quartet. In addition to lending her beautiful soprano voice to the church choir, she sang for 10 years in the Nebraska Choral Arts Society. With her first marriage having ended in divorce in 1982, she married Dick McGaughey in May of 1985. In so doing, she became the stepmother of three more daughters: Erin Gail, Kerry Leigh, and Stacie Jill McGaughey. In November of 2000 they retired to Colorado Springs, where they became active members of their church, including accompanying and singing in the choir and worship team, teaching Children’s Church, Men’s and Women’s Fellowship, and various small groups. After having been avid participants in Bible Study Fellowship for many years, while in Colorado Springs they also served as BSF Children’s Leaders. Their Colorado experience included much memorable time at their beloved “Chalet Quiescence” near Fairplay, Colorado. As a direct result of Laurene’s 2003 Alzheimer’s diagnosis, she and Dick moved to Arvada, Colorado where Laurene resided at Silverado Senior Living and Memory Care until the time of her death on October 16, 2013. Laurene was preceded in death by her parents and her very first grandchild, Peter Laurence Longhofer. In addition to her husband, her sister, Connie Johnston and her brother, Dr. Ken Anderson, both of Wichita, her survivors include daughters and husbands: Julie and Stanley Longhofer of Wichita, Jenny and Brendan Buchanan of Glenwood, Iowa, and Allene and Joshua Cumpston of Central City, Nebraska; stepdaughters and husbands: Erin and Mark Mantych of Arvada, Colorado, Kerry and Joe Wilde of Fort Belvoir, Virginia and Stacie and Paul Meder of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren: Zachary and Nina Longhofer, Alysun and Luke Mantych, Katie, Trevor and Tyler Cumpston, Jack and Jacob Wilde, Harbour, Trice, Mayer and Leo Buchanan, and Sophie and Colin Meder.
