Lawrence Joseph Cannon
November 8, 1953 – March 16, 2025
Lawrence Joseph “Larry” Cannon, born on November 8, 1953, in Spalding, Nebraska, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his immediate family on March 16, 2025, after a hard-fought battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. He grew up in Columbus, Nebraska, where he met his wife of 48 years, Sara (Slates) Cannon. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After a short stint in the broadcasting industry, he made the shift to the corporate world where he worked in Training and Development for Peter Kiewit. Eventually, he transitioned to Computer Systems Engineering, where he spent a majority of his career, ultimately retiring from Union Pacific. The last several years Larry enjoyed retirement spending time with Sara and his family, especially looking after his three wonderful granddaughters, whom he adored.
Larry was a jack of all trades, always willing to help family members, neighbors, and friends whether it was in carpentry, car mechanics, technology, plumbing, vegetable gardening or yard work. He liked helping others and did so selflessly. He enjoyed classic cars and classic rock, Husker football, cheering on his kids and granddaughters in sports, fishing and boating, traveling with Sara and his kids, and spending time with loved ones.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Sara (Slates) Cannon; beloved son, Andrew “Andy” (daughter-in-law, Ashley) and their children, Ava, Adalynn “Addy” and Aria Cannon; beloved daughter, Jessica “Jess” Cannon; sisters and their husbands: Regina Cannon Lehnhoff (husband, Jim), Joan Cannon, and Janelle Cannon Giannola (husband, Scott); sisters-in-law: Kathleen (Tierney) Cannon and Lori (Wurdeman) Slates; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

We have known Larry and his family since our boys attended St James Seton school together. We’ve appreciated watching how involved he has been in helping lead his family as a strong father figure. Larry has always been a positive example for his children to follow.
Sorry to hear of Larry’s passing..he was a Good Soul….may he rest in peace.
Sara and family, so sad for your loss. Larry was a quiet and blessed friend and classmate. Remember the good times and know you will see him again.
Dear Sara, It broke my heart to hear of Larry’s passing. He truly was a wonderful man.
Sara and family, I wish you God’s comfort in the loss of your dear husband/father.
I feel like we should come for the funeral, but I feel too old and weary to make the trip at this time.
Sara, Jess and Andy, I’m so very sorry to hear of your loss. Larry was truly an enjoyable and friendly soul that we were lucky enough to spend some time with through the years.
Larry Cannon, a handsome, intelligent, kind human being. Larry spent a year or so as part of the K-TTT Radio staff. I recall Larry’s commitment to AND adoration for you, Sara. His quiet sense of humor and his emotional attachment to his advertising customers. A great fellow, how can he NOT be missed?
Good Speed!
Edward Riley
