Lois Lorraine (Even) Mahowald
August 15, 1945 – August 16, 2025
Lois Lorraine (Even) Mahowald was born to Leonard and Dorothy on VJ Day, August 15, 1945, and raised on the family farm near Castlewood, South Dakota. Lois studied nursing in Pierre, SD, and was pinned a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1965. Ever the servant to others, Lois began nursing in Watertown, SD, where she met Stephen, fell in love and married in an epic blizzard on the Feast of St. Valentine, February 14th, 1969. Their family moved to Omaha in 1975 where they reside today.
Lois’ Catholic faith and her family were the most important things in her life. She treasured her time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The highlight of her life was when her son, Christopher, was ordained a Roman Catholic priest. Lois was active at Immaculate Conception Parish where she attended the Traditional Latin Mass daily for years. She volunteered in the Legion of Mary and Altar Society among other organizations. Loved by many as a friend, “adopted” mother, grandmother, and godmother, Lois shared her love, warmth and faith with all she met.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Dorothy Even; sister-in-law, Betty Even; and four grandchildren.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Stephen Mahowald; children: Theresa Kokesh (Mike), Trish Folda (Dave), Micki, Stephanie Isenberger (Jeff), Mark (Josie), Reverend Christopher Mahowald F.S.S.P, Timothy (Dara), and Mary Hodge; 21 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and 1 more on the way; brother, Larry Even; sisters, Karen Mathis (Don), and Diane Potter; and many nieces and nephews.
Lois died after receiving the Last Sacraments, surrounded by her family in prayer, the day after her 80th birthday. She passed wearing her brown scapular, grasping a crucifix in one hand, and a rosary and the hand of her dear husband in the other.
Family will receive friends Friday, August 22, 2025, from 5-7pm at Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler, West Center Chapel with the recitation of the Holy Rosary to begin at 7PM.
Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday, August 23, 2025, 9am at Immaculate Conception Parish (2708 South 24th Street).
Interment: St. John’s Cemetery in Bellevue, Ne
In lieu of flowers Lois has requested Mass offerings to be made at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary or Immaculate Conception Church

This will be a particularly difficult time, but always remember the love, laughter and good times. May Jesus receive Lois with mercy. I’m offering a novena of Rosaries for her soul. Sending my love
So sorry to hear this. May God provide the family with everything you need. What a beautiful woman. Prayers for all.
Sending my most heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to the whole Mahowald family. Mrs. Lois was an amazing woman who raised amazing children alongside Mr. Steve.
My deepest sympathy and prayers to you at this time of the sudden loss of dear Lois. I will pray for her and all of your family. She was a beacon of hope, a light for the world, and the best example of a good Catholic, a good wife, a good mother, and good grandmother I have ever known. She was always kind, and had a smile on her face. I admired her work at church and in the holy sacramental business that she and Steve ran until just last year. May God grant her the eternal rest in heaven as she is so VERY deserving and may she help us all down here on earth. What a gift she and Steve have given us in the beautiful priest son, Fr. Chris, who we are so privileged to have now as our pastor at ICC. May God repay her a hundred fold with the highest place possible for her up in heaven. May she sit right beside the dear Blessed Mother and save a place for all of us too someday, we hope and pray. Until we meet again…
I am so sorry for your (and our) great loss. Lois was clearly the beautiful and vibrant heart of your family. It doesn’t seem possible that she is gone. I can’t imagine how hard this must be. God bless and comfort you all… and all of the rest of us too! Be assured of my continued prayers.
