Loraine R. Mommens

May 10, 1926 – August 22, 2018

Loraine Ruth Stichweh was born on May 10, 1926 in Pleasant Ridge, Illinois to Susette Einsphahr and Henry F. Stichweh. She graduated from Beatrice, Nebraska High School in 1945. Loraine married August W. J. Mommens on June 2, 1946 in Plymouth, Nebraska.

Loraine and August moved to Springfield, Illinois where August attended Concordia Theological Seminary.  Upon his graduation and ordination in 1952, they served at their first parish in McGregor, Iowa.  Throughout the years they served at parishes in Jamison, Nebraska;  Elwood, Nebraska; Friedensau, Nebraska; New Rockford, North Dakota; Hankinson, North Dakota; Foster, Nebraska; La Belle, Florida; and John Day, Oregon. Loraine served as an exemplary partner in their ministry at these parishes.  Upon retirement they served many years on Laborers for Christ teams helping to build churches in Missouri, Wisconsin, and Utah.  In addition to her role as wife, mother, and grandmother, Loraine was an accomplished seamstress, needle worker, and quilter. She has quilted countless quilts for the many babies in her life.  She has sewn heirloom baptismal gowns for each of her children to be used at the baptisms of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Loraine was an amazing Mother to eleven children: David (Donna) Mommens, Susan (James Reiken), Paul (Marsha) Mommens, Mary Swanstrom, Lois (Paul) Koehler, Ruth (Glen) Rademacher, Eunice (Rob Shuman) Mommens, Naomi (Eric) Franzen, John (Tina) Mommens, Esther (Joe) Cloeter, and Timothy Mommens.

Loraine is survived by her children and their spouses; her sister, Arlene Mass of Conroy, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Vernabelle Adams of Valley, Nebraska; more than 100 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; many much-loved nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, August; her parents; her sister, Aurelia Schneidereit; her sons-in-law, James Rieken and Richard Swanstrom; her daughter-in-law, Madonna Mommens; and grandsons, Timothy Michael Mommens and Gabriel Thomas Rademacher.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 25th from 12noon to 2pm at Zion Lutheran Church, 14205 Ida St., followed by SERVICES at 2pm.  Graveside Service: Monday, August 27th at 2pm at Grand Island, NE Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to Lamb of God Lutheran Church Building Fund (Papillion, NE), or Heartland Lutheran High School (Grand Island, NE).

    God has another one of his angels back home. Loraine and Auggie certainly leave behind an amazing legacy. My sincere condolences to all of you.

    Dear Mommens family, what a joy it was to know your dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother!! Always so friendly and such a delight! She touched many many lives and will be greatly missed! May our Lord and Savior grant each of you peace and comfort. Because Christ lives so does she!!

    We remember Lorraine and the happy family she raised, She was a phenomenal woman and we are sad that she has gone, but gladdened that she is now with her heavenly family.
