Luis S. Salcedo

Luis S. Salcedo

August 18, 1936 – October 21, 2024

Luis S. Salcedo, age 88 years, was a beloved husband, father, son, uncle, grandfather, great- grandfather, and friend. He was born on August 18, 1936, in Ocotlan-Jalisco, Mexico.

The son of the late Maria De Refugio Segura and Luis Salcedo Gonzales, Luis was raised in Cojumatlan De Regules (Michoacan), Mexico, with a strong teaching and devotion in the Catholic faith.

As a young man, Luis worked along his father in the family’s farm business growing onions, lettuce, and other vegetables that they sold to numerous mercados located in and around their town.

After his father’s passing, Luis moved on from farming and started his quest for adventure by leaving his small town and moving to one of the largest cities in the world, Mexico City. In the city, Luis quickly found work with Mexicana Airlines.  Working for an international airline and living in one of the most populated cities in the world full of cultural sites and history, Luis’ interest in adventure and travel only grew.

As a result, Luis took advantage to legally move to the United States circa 1954. He arrived to California and settled in the Central Valley, known for its extensive agricultural production of fruits, vegetable and nuts, and easily found work considering his farming background. In pursuit for continuous betterment and further adventure, Luis moved to Omaha, NE to join a family relative already living there, who spoke of better job opportunities with higher pay and a lower cost of living than in California. He quickly found work in construction and in the packing houses, including time at Wilson Packing. Even after long days of work, Luis found the time to study English and mechanical maintenance eventually helping him land a better position with benefits at Continental Can, where he worked in the maintenance department. After many years at Continental Can, he was offered a custodian position with the Iowa Public School system, that he accepted.  It was a position where he could apply many of his skills and worked there happily until his retirement.

Not too long after arriving in Omaha, Luis met and married the love of his life, Rosemary Campos, on December 21, 1963. They were married for 57 wonderful years and had two children, Nancy and Danny.

Luis and Rosemary had many adventures in life that included traveling. There were multiple cruise voyages throughout the Caribbean, extended stays in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico spent with family and European vacations that included tours of Spain, Italy and Portugal. Also spending extensive time in California with their family; especially at Christmas.

Their favorite activity through their married life, was spending time with their pride and joy, which were their children, grandchildren: Ashley, Brittany, Monica and Alexis, and great-grandchildren: Michael, Austin, Ryan and Jaylie, wherever in the world they resided. Beautiful and memorable times and holidays with family were spent in the Caribbean, Mexico, California, and of course, in Omaha.

Luis achieved his dream of adventure and travel, and thanked God for all his wonderful family and cherished blessings. It was no surprise then that one of Luis’ favorites songs was “What A Wonderful World.”

Luis was beloved and will be sorely missed but his memory will live on in all of us until we’re all reunited again with him and Rosemary.

Several years ago, while I was working in my medical practice I got a message that my cousin Luis wanted to talk to me. Initially, I thought it was a joke because I did not know him. I called him back, and, we arranged a meeting. His family and my family met in a restaurant. It was a wonderful first encounter. We talked like we knew each other for a long time (even though it was the first time). Luis personality was amazing, he was an enjoyable, very social person. After that first encounter, we got closer. Every time he came to Fresno with his wife Rosemary, we met and had a very nice family reunion. We are going to miss him, and he always is going to live in our hearts. God bless my cousin Luis
