Madeline Caroline (Dame) Umhoefer

UMHOEFER, Madeline Caroline (Dame) May 1, 1923 – Mar 17, 2013 Madeline was born on May 1, 1923 in Oakland, Nebraska. She was the fourth and youngest child of Esther and Herman Dame, immigrants from Sweden. Madeline joined her three older brothers, Cliff, Ray and Lloyd. As a child, she loved to play paper dolls and wanted to be a dress designer when she grew up. She had rheumatic fever when she was nine years old again when she was ten. She overheard the doctor tell her parents she only had a few months to live. But Madeline recovered and attended Oakland public schools, graduating in 1941. She had many jobs after high school. When World War II broke out, she decided to move to Oakland, California where she worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. After the war, Madeline moved back to Oakland, Nebraska. One day her brother brought a Navy friend, Pete Umhoefer, home to visit. Madeline and Pete dated and were married in April of 1947 and had two daughters, Terri and Monica. In 1954 the family moved to Kansas where they lived until 1961 when Pete transferred to Omaha with Enron. Pete died in 1976. In 1992 Madeline had open heart surgery to repair her heart valves. She was so thankful for a fourth chance of life that she started knitting hats for premature babies. Since 1992 she knitted and donated over 6,000 hats to Bergan Mercy Hospital. Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, Peter and grandson, Christopher Gerweck. She is survived by daughters, Terri Gerweck (Terry) and Monica Umhoefer; granddaughters: Katie Krovance (Aaron), Ellen Kassmeier (Bob) and Elizabeth Gerweck; great-grandchildren: Joe and Caroline Krovance, Evelyn Kassmeier. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 19, 6pm to 7pm with ROSARY at 7pm at the West Center Chapel. SERVICES Wednesday, March 20, 9:30am, West Center Chapel to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church for MASS at 10am. Interment, Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Father Michael Mukasa Uganda Education Fund c/o St. Margaret Mary Church, or to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.
