Margaret Elaine Bugenhagen was born on October 22, 1931, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Jerome and Martha Karthaus. Margaret Elaine was accompanied into this world by her twin sister, Mary Eloise, and both joined their older sister, Martha Mary.

During their youth, Margaret Elaine and Mary Eloise won several competitions as the most look-alike twins. Upon graduating from Cathedral High School, Margaret Elaine attended The University of Omaha and worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone. On December 30, 1953, she married Charles Bugenhagen, her husband of 69 years.

Margaret Elaine became a military wife until the couple relocated to Mitchell, South Dakota, where Charles founded a family business with the help of Margaret Elaine, who devoted her time raising their four children.  In addition, while living in Mitchell, Margaret Elaine was a member of the local chapter of P.E.O, a women’s philanthropy organization celebrating women’s motivation, advancement, and education. She was also active in the Jaycees.

In 1986, Margaret Elaine moved with Charles back to her hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, where she taught in the Westside Early Childhood Centers for 27 years. During her teaching career, she won many awards and thoroughly enjoyed working with her students.

Margaret Elaine was a devoted mother to her children. She was a remarkable woman whose kindness, grace, compassion, and unwavering faith were instilled in her children and touched the lives of all who knew her.  Margaret Elaine enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends. One of her favorite times was the family’s annual vacation to Lake Okoboji, where she looked forward to seeing everyone together.

Margaret Elaine was 92 years old when she died on March 21, 2024. She was resting comfortably at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, surrounded by loving family members celebrating and reminiscing about her extraordinary life.
