Margaret McGarry Struyk

STRUYK, Margaret McGarry Nov 27, 1917 – Aug 12, 2013 Margaret McGarry Struyk, 95, passed away quietly on August 12, 2013. Margaret was born on November 27, 1917 in Oak Park, Illinois to Raymond and Hazel McGarry. She was the oldest of the three McGarry sisters, Cory and Ray. She attended Lions Township Public School, graduating from high school in 1935. Margaret attended the University of Illinois-Champagne graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in 1939. She met Jack Struyk while working at BF Goodrich in Huntington, Indiana and they were married at the Catholic Church in LaGrange, Illinois on April 26, 1941. With the start of World War II they moved to Chicago and shortly thereafter Jack was hired by Hallmark Cards. The couple lived in Boston where their first child Garry (Cyndi) was born in1943, Ann Harbor, Michigan where Raymond (Anke) in 1944 was born before moving to Omaha in 1947. The rest of the Struyk children were born in Omaha: Frances (1947), Molly (Dennis) 1949, Bill (Stephanie) 1952, Jack (Polly) 1955, Hazel (1956), Tommy (1958), and Peggy (1960). Margaret’s legacy includes 29 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Margaret took great pride in the fact that all her children received a college degree and that Tommy followed her father’s career and became a CPA. She was a member of the CLC, Brownson Circle and was a Daughter of the American Revolution for 26 years. Margaret was always active at Christ the King and the Cathedral Churches. She retired from Mutual of Omaha in 1982. Margaret was interested in many issues, was an avid bridge player, enjoyed the theatre, took great pride in her stamp collection, became a genealogist and loved her many friends. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters and her beloved son Tommy. Margaret was a great example of grace, dignity and good cheer. In her children’s minds they are better people for having had Margaret as their mother. VISITATION begins Friday, Aug. 16th at 5pm at the West Center Chapel, with ROSARY to follow at 7pm. Following the Rosary, we invite everyone to join us in a celebration of Mom’s life at Jack and Polly’s home. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held Saturday at 10am at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, 16701 “S” St. Interment, Resurrection Cemetery. It was Mom’s wish that any memorials be given to St. Cecilia Cathedral Parish.
