At the age of 90 years, Margherita Bartolomei passed away peacefully on February 22, 2017, surrounded by her family. Margherita was born December 21, 1926 to Giovanni and Clotilda Sichi in Marseille, France. When she was two months of age, the family moved to the Tuscany region of Italy to the small hill town of Riolo. There the family grew to include her brother, Lisio and adopted brother, Giuseppe Chieroni. Margherita helped her mother raise her two younger brothers while her father worked outside the country.

In her youth Margherita enjoyed dancing and music. She would work in the nearby town of Bagni di Lucca for a statuary company. Statuary ironically, would play a major role in her life. Having left 15 years prior, in July of 1953, Nelso Bartolomei returned to his hometown near Riolo after having established a statuary business in Omaha. On his return to Italy, Nelso found the love of his life, Margherita, whom he picked “from a cherry tree.” The young couple married on September 17, 1953 and immediately began to start a family. Margherita moved to the United States with her new husband where they raised a family of seven children. They were happily married for 48 years until Nelso’s death in 2002. After Nelso passed away, Margherita spent her remaining years in the company of her children and grandchildren whom she loved so dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelso; daughter-in-law, Imelda. She is survived by her sons: John, Robert, Mark (JoAnn), and Danny (Erin); daughters: Anna Thibodeaux (Wes), Lori Schrock (Bryan), and JoAnn McGargill (Tom); twelve grandchildren; brothers, Lisio Sichi and Giuseppe Chieroni; sister-in-law, Neva Orsi.
