Marilyn G. “Penny” Cassling
November 27, 1928 – November 11, 2022
Marilyn G. “Penny” Cassling passed away on Friday, November 11, 2022, just shy of her 94th birthday, November 27th.
She is survived by her son, William E. “Bo” Gratton; loved and affectionately called “Honey” by her grandchildren: Richard Noordam, Elyssa Dingman (Travis), Sarah Noordam (Logan), Nicholas Gratton, Chadrick Gratton, and Paige Gratton; great-grandchild, Dax Dingman; sister, Karen Rhodes Schmidt; families of Eric Rhodes (Colleen), Lisa Ray (Peter), Buffy “B” Gratton, Linda Gratton, Lynn Ahrens (Bob), Susan Clark, Dr. Robert Cassling (Susan), Dr. Randall Cassling (Lori), and Michael Cassling (Elizabeth).
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Richard C. Gratton and H. Robert Cassling; son, Richard C. Gratton II; daughter, Karen L. Gratton Meisinger.
Penny was an Alpha Phi at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where she graduated with a degree in speech pathology in 1951. She later went on to serve as President of the Lincoln Alpha Phi Alumnae, as well as District Governor and House Board. She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church and helped found the Presbyterian Church of the Cross. She had a passion for philanthropy, including the Immanuel Hospital Bazaar, Omaha Symphony Women’s Guild, and too many others to list. Penny enjoyed spending quality time with her family and friends in her most beloved places: Maui, HI, Mt. Hood, OR, and Lake Okoboji, where her claim to fame was swimming across the entire lake.
Services for immediate family will be held Wednesday, November 16th, 2022, at Presbyterian Church of the Cross. “Penny’s Last Party” for family and friends will be held Thursday, November 17th, 2022, from 5pm-7pm, at Happy Hollow Country Club.
