Marilyn (Kalin) Mattern

August 25, 1928 – October 27, 2018

Preceded in death by parents, Ben and Emma Rucker Kalin; husband of 55 years, Bill; five brothers and two sisters, including identical twin sister, Margaret Morin of Lincoln.  Survived by brother, The Reverend William Kalin of Lincoln; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jo and Larry Rice of Omaha; five sons and daughters-in-law:  Pat and Patty of Milwaukee, Mark and Katherine Kratz of Cleveland, Ben and Maureen of Lincoln, Matt and Janice of Macungie, PA, Bill and Jean of Omaha; three daughters and sons-in-law: Kate and Craig Derickson of Lincoln, Mary and Bob Gonderinger of Omaha, and Liz and Rod Rhodes of Gretna; twenty-seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

In 1950 Marilyn and Bill moved to O’Neill where they raised their eight children.  Marilyn was an avid bridge player and sought-after partner.  She was a member of St. Patrick’s Altar Society, CCD teacher, and frequent volunteer at St. Mary’s schools.  She was Director of Social Services for Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital and a member of the Franciscan Volunteer Corps. She had a gift of hospitality and party planning, and was always delighted with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 2nd from 4pm until 5pm at the West Center Chapel, 7805 W. Center Rd. in Omaha, followed by ROSARY AND VIGIL SERVICE at 5pm.  Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Catholic Schools, both in O’Neill, NE, and O’Neill Public Library.

O’Neill, Nebraska Service Information:  VISITATION on Saturday, November 3rd, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in O’Neill, followed by MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL at 11am.

    I remember the first time I ever heard Opera music was in your house because of Marilyn -and I remember the stereo was in the blue living room where we were not allowed-much love going out to Mattern’s -she was an amazing woman and my heart is heavy tonight

    Remember that smile- it was always present. Thanks that you & Marilyn along with kids were a part of mother’s life – it’s meant a lot. Wonderful family – great parents. It was a purposeful life. God will welcome her
