Mark Lynn Newberg

Mark Lynn Newberg, 54, passed away on May 24, 2024, at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Nebraska. Born on August 6, 1969, in Oshkosh, Nebraska, Mark was the beloved son of Janelle (Thomas) Barker of Columbus, Nebraska, and the late Lynn Leonard Newberg of Chappell, Nebraska.
Mark grew up in Deuel County, Nebraska, where he was raised on the family farm between Chappell and Oshkosh. He graduated from Chappell High School in Chappell, Nebraska, in 1988, and went on to attend Kearney State College, now known as the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Mark returned to his roots, dedicating his life to farming on the family land he cherished.
Mark was a man of the land, with a deep love for agriculture and the community he served. His dedication to farming was evident in the way he cared for his crops and livestock. Mark’s work ethic and integrity were admired by all who knew him.
Mark is survived by his mother, Janelle (Thomas) Barker of Columbus, Nebraska; three sisters, Lisa (Newberg) Shackelford of Blue Springs, Missouri, Heather (Newberg) Armstrong and her husband, Dan Armstrong, of White Oak, Texas, and Casey (Barker) Crews and her husband, Jimmy Crews, of Nevada, Missouri; two brothers, Jim Newberg and his wife, Kelly Newberg, of Whitehouse, Texas, and Travis Barker of Grandview, Missouri. He also leaves behind his aunts and uncles, Leon and Linda Newberg of Essex, Connecticut, and Ron and Janie Thomas of Columbus, Nebraska; as well as his cousins, Rachel (Thomas) Kraft and her husband, Jeff, Collin Thomas and his wife, Lisa, and Carmen (Thomas) Peters and her husband ,Greg. Mark was also a loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Lynn L. Newberg of Chappell, Nebraska; his grandparents, Arlene and Raymond Thomas, of Columbus, Nebraska; Leonard and Gen Newberg of Chappell, Nebraska; and Virginia (Armstrong Newberg) and Leonard Saponaro of Everett, Washington.
A Celebration of Mark’s life will be held this summer in Chappell, Nebraska, with more details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mark’s memory to Berea Lutheran Church in Chappell, Nebraska, or Creek Valley Public Schools in Chappell, Nebraska, reflecting his commitment to his faith, the importance of family, friends, and community and his love of sports, especially high school track. Mark’s life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and the importance of family and community. His memory will be forever cherished by those who knew and loved him.

I will always remember Mark playing the guitar with Grandpa Thomas. That grin and his laugh will be something I’ll never forget.
Newly was a good friend and classmate growing up. When I think of him, I think of his smile and his laugh. We had lots of fun, but also many serious conversations. God bless you all in mourning the loss that came too soon.
Spent more days than I can count fishing, hunting, driving around the country enjoying laughs and great times together. Newb made me laugh all the time and I can still hear him.say ” Otis my main man!”
