Martin “Tom” Schmitz passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2021. Tom was born on January 11, 1933 in Papillion, Nebraska. He graduated from Papillion High School in 1950 where he won the State Baseball Title with the Millard Legion team. On October 14, 1961, he was united in marriage to Vera C. Blum at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Vera and Tom met at Papio Bowling Alley and spent much of their adult lives enjoying bowling, family gatherings, and polka music; particularly with their dear friend, Dean Hansen (The Polka Hall of Famer).
Tom was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska since 1961. He worked for Essex Corporation as a maintenance supervisor; and was very proud of his home near Ak-Sar-Ben field. Tom loved to work crossword puzzles, tell stories, reminisce about the good old days, particularly about winning the State Baseball Title, bowling, his father’s race horses, and visiting friends and family. His stories were often told with remarkable detail and pride.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera, of 47 years; parents, Martin and Edna (Fish); sister, Ruth; brothers, Bob and Jim. He is survived by nieces, nephews, and friends.
