Marvin Zimmerman, age 91, of Omaha, Nebraska passed away on March 26, 2017. He was born on December 30, 1925 at Falls City, Nebraska to the late Jacob Otto and Amelia (Niemeyer) Zimmerman. On August 9, 1946 he married Darlene Groves at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in south Omaha.
Marvin was born and raised on a farm northeast of Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School in 1943. He moved to Elmhurst, Illinois where he attended Elmhurst College of Theology for one year. He and his college roommate, Don Grunwald, moved to St. Louis, Missouri to work in the accounting department of a defense plant. After the war ended, he worked for a short time at an Army tank manufacturing plant in St. Louis. Soon after, he moved to Omaha and worked in the wholesale department at Wilson Packing House. While reading a Reader’s Digest and waiting for a bus in a south Omaha drugstore, he met Darlene and they were married soon after. The couple established residence in south Omaha and Marvin went to work with Grunwald Mechanical Contractors until he left in 1982. He then went to work and set up the accounting system for a small trucking and transport company in Millard. After five years, he took a part time job at Peterson Michaelson Hardware in south Omaha where he worked until his retirement in 2008.
Marvin joined the Mason’s in 1959 and soon became a Third Degree Mason through the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 154 and served as president in 1984. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and later transferred membership to Trinity Lutheran Church in Papillion. He was a YMCA Little League baseball coach. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and he loved bowling, golfing, playing cards and polka/waltz dancing with Darlene.
Marvin is survived by son, Terry and his wife Anita of Tucson, Arizona; daughter-in-law, Irene Zimmerman of Omaha; grandchildren: David Zimmerman, Daniel Zimmerman, Jessica Zimmerman, Brian Zimmerman (Sara), and Shirley Tipler (Eric); sisters, Laura Kottich of Falls City and Burdeen Prater of Papillion; brother, Howard Zimmerman (Mina) of Falls City; seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Darlene; son, Dennis; sisters, Margie Steinman and Jeanette Bumpker.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 4th, from 5pm to 7pm at the Bel Air Chapel, 12100 W. Center Rd. MEMORIAL SERVICE Wednesday, April 5th at 11am at the Bel Air Chapel. Interment Thursday, April 6th at 11:30am at Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery in Falls City, NE.
