Mary Alice (Scanlan) Wardian

Mary Alice (Scanlan) Wardian

November 10, 1928 – October 13, 2020

Mary Alice was born on November 10, 1928 in Omaha, NE to Bart and Ethel (Woolheater) Scanlan.  She had six brothers and sisters, Raymond (Pat) Scanlan, Lucille (Leon) Emmet, Vera (Charlie) Kusleika, Margaret (Ben) Bosco, and is survived by her brother, Bernard (Donna) Scanlan.  She attended Holy Angels grade school and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Omaha.

Mary married James Wardian on her birthday in 1951.  (Notre Dame lost to Michigan State that day and Jim had been known to blame Mary for that loss for many years.)  Together they created a large and close family, having, eight children, Sue (Bob) Hartung, Joe (Helen), Liz (Dave) Fox, Mark (Jana), John (Carol), Jeanne (Bob) Maher, Terri English, and Colleen (Marty) Killeen.

Mary has 21 grandchildren: Rachel, Maureen (Shawn Avery), Audrey and Dominic Wardian, Jennifer (Chris) Bradley, Rob (Nina), Dan, and Jamie Fox, Eric, Bryan Wardian, and Kat (Frank) Gagliano, Corinne and Jim Wardian, Kelly, Robin, and Nicole Maher, Patrick, Brigid, and Peggy English, and Mary and Mae Killeen.  She has 7 great-grandchildren: Jack, Charlie, Mick, and Jimmy Bradley, Sam and Gigi Fox, and Norah Gagliano.

Our close-knit family was created by our parents with a lot of love and many family traditions, special holidays, awesome (though in-expensive) vacations, and other celebrations.  Mom was the heart of our family, and though our hearts break with her passing, we will honor her as we carry on many of those happy traditions.

Preceded in death by husband, James F.  Survived by children: Susan Wardian Hartung (Bob), Joseph Wardian (Helen), Elizabeth Fox (David), Mark Wardian (Jana), John Wardian (Carol), Jeanne Maher (Bob), Terri English and Colleen Killeen (Marty); 21 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Bernard Scanlan; nieces and nephews.

VISITATION following CDC guidelines: Thursday, October 15th from 5pm to 7pm, at the West Center Chapel followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm.  MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Friday, October 16th, 10am, St. Thomas More Catholic Church (4804 Grover St.)  INTERMENT: Calvary Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the St. Thomas More Endowment Fund.
