Born in Denison, Iowa, Mary grew up in Dunlap. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class at St. Joseph High School in 1966, and went on to pursue her education in Omaha at College of St. Mary, where she majored in math. Mary completed her teaching certificate and began teaching math at Ryan High School. While working at Ryan, she met Mike and the two were married at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dunlap, Iowa in June of 1971.
Mary dedicated her life to sharing her love of math with students, spending more than forty years teaching—at Ryan High School, Mercy High School, and Metropolitan Community College. Mary found great joy spending time with her grandchildren and celebrating their milestones.

The Piernicky family has another Angel in Heaven. Mary helped so many people understand Math and that I’m sure they considered her an Angel on Earth. She was soft spoken and kind and made the best fudge in the world. We’ll miss her. Mike you and you’re family are in our prayers. May you find peace in each other and your Faith. God Bless you all.

Mike, Mike & Jamie & kids, and Megan:
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Losing someone is always difficult, but losing someone around the holidays is even tougher. I hope you can focus on the “gifts” which Mary gave all of you as a wife, mother, and grandmother, but also the wonderful gift of knowledge that she shared with so many students and colleagues.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. I pray that with each passing day the tears get a little less and the wonderful, loving memories bring more smiles.
Blessings to you all!
Sincerely,
“Charley”

We had dinner with Mary and Mike (Taco Tuesday!) just a few days before our move to South Carolina 18 months ago .. we are so glad for that wonderful memory of time spent together. Mary was such a delight and absolutely brightened up the room when she arrived. Our deepest sympathy to the Piernicky Family. Heaven has definitely gained an Angel.

Mrs. Piernicky, I was not a very good student in your Freshman Algebra and Southmore Geometry classes. I will never forget your patience and encouragement you gave me. It worked. I have my Bachelors Degree, 30 plus years in the Army, and will always remember your patience. God bless you Mrs. Piernicky.
