Mary Diane Mertz

Mary Diane Mertz

September 10, 1946 – March 23, 2020

Mary Diane Mertz died peacefully in her home in North Redington Beach, FL on March 23, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mary was born on September 10, 1946 in Tracy, MN to Virgil and Eileen Hughes.  Mary graduated Scotus Catholic High School in Columbus, NE in 1964 and studied at Kearney State College.  In 1967 she married Robert Wieck and they resided in Omaha, NE for over twenty years raising their three children.  Mary married Greg Mertz in 2000 in North Redington Beach, FL where they made their home and enjoyed life at the beach.

Mary cared deeply about her faith and community.  She was involved in her church and a local Guardian Ad Litem program to help at risk children.  Mary loved music and was a member of her church’s choir for many years.  Mary led a very full and active life.  As well as being an accomplished racquetball and tennis player, she enjoyed dancing and biking.  She participated in a 100-mile charity bike ride and completed the event for the final time at 70 years old.  Mary enjoyed her quiet time as well, relaxing with a good book.  She found great peace and comfort in taking long walks on the beach and watching the sunset over the ocean.

As much as Mary enjoyed all of these things, her true love and passion was her family.  Her love was immense and all encompassing.  Mary was always more concerned about others than herself and had a way of making everyone feel special and valued.  She was the most loving kind, generous, and genuine soul and touched the hearts of so many.  Everything she did, she did with grace, even until her final days.  To know Mary was to love her.

Mary is survived by her husband of nearly 20 years, Greg Mertz; her children: Chad (Lynette) Wieck, Stephanie (Dave) Distefano, and Kelli (Jerry Harvat) Wade; step-daughter, Stacey (Dave) Padovan; step-son, Wesley (Nevie) Mertz; grandchildren: Natalie (Matt), Brianne, Colton, John David, Adam, Connor, Cylie, Sarah, Chloe, Sam, Nick, Joe, Laina, Sidney, Kennedy, Jay, and Lily; great-grandchild, Harper; siblings, Brian (Kay) Hughes, Bob (Mary Pat) Hughes, and Patti Peetz; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Eileen Hughes of Columbus, NE; and brother-in-law Dan Peetz.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE in Omaha, NE and N. Redington Beach, FL will be announced at a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
