Mary Olson died December 21, 2021, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, after a brief illness. Visitation will be Sunday, December 26th from 4pm to 6pm at Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler at 7805 W. Center Road. Memorial Service: Monday, December 27th at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church, 2650 Farnam Street, at 1pm.
Mary was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 25, 1954, to Edward and Betty Olson. She was the third of five siblings. Mary grew up and went to school in Chicago. After high school she went to become a candy striper and then went to work in a doctor’s office. Mary left there to work for Illinois Bell Telephone Company for several years. She then went to work for Midway Airport helping passengers. When Southwest came to Midway Airport, she applied with them and was excited to get hired. Mary worked in Chicago at Midway Airport till she transferred to Omaha in April of 2010 to be close to family. Mary was an Ops Agent for Southwest and worked there till her stroke in 2016 which forced her to retire.
Mary was a very giving person. Never having any children of her own she would spoil all her nieces and nephews. Mary would do almost anything for them. As they grew and had children, she started to spoil her grandniece and grandnephew. Mary loved it when they would come over to visit. She would always make sure she had toys, snacks, and plenty of surprises for them. Mary loved watching them grow and was amazed at what they could do at such a young age. She would give or do anything for them or family, that would also include her Southwest family. While working for Southwest she also helped maintain “crash pads” for pilots and flight attendants whom would have layovers in Chicago. If they were laid over during a holiday, Mary would make sure they got a holiday meal. She loved cooking for her Southwest family and doing whatever she could for them.
Mary is survived by sister, Kathy Sonderup (Russ); and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandnephew. She was preceded in death by parents, Edward and Betty Olson; brother, Arthur Olson; sister, Donna Baker; brother-in-law, Donald Baker; sister, Darlene Cole; and niece, Mari Sonderup.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church.
