At the age of 94 years, Mary “Polly” Duffield passed away peacefully on March 13, 2017, surrounded by her family.  Polly was born on December 23, 1922 to Arnold and Violet Mader in Omaha, Nebraska.  She had an older sister, Dorothy, born in 1919 and a younger sister, Ruth, born in 1925.  They were a close-knit loving family.

When Polly was 17 she met William Duffield at a Valentine’s Day party and they knew instantly that they were meant for each other.  They were engaged in 1941.

William was stationed at the Army base in Oahu during the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Communication was very poor and it was weeks before Polly heard from him.  In fact, little was heard about the war for a long time.  Feeling she had to do something to help her country, Polly enlisted in the Marines.

In 1945 Polly married William, was discharged from the Marines, and moved back to Omaha.  William became a pipe insulator with Local 39 while Polly stayed home with their three sons, William II, Michael and Paul.  In 1962 she went back to work and started her career with Millard Lumber.  William and Polly were happily married for 39 years until William’s death in 1985.

Polly retired from Millard Lumber in 1987 and took the time to enjoy traveling—to Australia, Germany and Canada, just to name a few.  Polly spent her remaining years in the company of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she loved so dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; sisters, Dorothy Clark and Ruth Duffield.  She is survived by her sons:  William II, Michael (Rhonda), and Paul (Char); brother in-law, Jack Duffield; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
