Mary Elizabeth Dowd
May 18, 1948 – April 6, 2022
Mary Elizabeth (Stewart) Dowd, 73, of Austin, TX and Omaha, NE passed away on April 6, 2022, in Austin, TX.
Born Mary Elizabeth Stewart on May 18, 1948 to Edward Thompson Stewart and Mary Ellen Kenny Stewart of Omaha, NE. Mary made many lifelong, dear friends while attending Marian High School and Creighton University where she earned a degree in Journalism. She met her husband, Bill, in 1968 and they married in 1970. They lived in Omaha, where they raised their three children, until 2005 when they began spending half of their time in Austin.
At 5’0” tall, her family and friends will remember Mary as small but mighty. Her peaceful strength provided great comfort to those she held close. She was funny, sweet, and generous with her time, often dropping everything to help her family and friends or volunteering for the Ladies of Charity Lake Travis Thrift Shop. She was an avid reader who put her clever curiosity to work for several years at the Omaha Public Library. A lifelong learner, she had a wealth of knowledge and wisdom and could break down a Nebraska Cornhusker football game better than the pros.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, William Maurice Dowd; children: Samuel Stewart Dowd (Jenny), Michaela Elizabeth Dowd (Chris Morgan), and Anne Cathleen Dowd; one grandchild, Hazel Elizabeth Morgan; aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mary’s body was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, NE on April 12, 2022, following the celebration of Mass at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. Please join with family and friends at a Memorial of the Celebration of Mary’s Life at 1:30pm on May 14th at Queen of Angels chapel in Spicewood, TX. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, with messages requesting initiatives to promote screenings for post-menopausal women.
