Mary K. Hurt

October 25, 1946 – February 5, 2023

Mary Kaye (Novacek) Hurt of Omaha, Nebraska, was born on October 25, 1946, and transitioned February 5, 2023.

She is survived by her son, Dustin; brothers: Danny (Linda), Tom, David (Margaret), and Gordon (Alberta); as well as many nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” L. Hurt; parents, Harry and Gladys Novacek; brother, Mike;

Mary Kaye was loved by all who knew her. She owned and operated her hair salon, Belle Cheri, in Millard for years before opening her in-home salon, where she made countless lifelong friends. In 1964, Mary Kaye and seven young moms started a cards club, and they kept it going for over 50 years! She was known as the “Cookie Lady” by neighborhood kids for always having treats ready for them. Growing up in a small town with 5 brothers made Mary Kaye tough.

She had a fun life. She loved rock and roll and visited the annual Winter Dance Party in Clear Lake, IA, to honor Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, & The Big Bopper. She deeply loved her son and all of his friends as though they were her own. She always welcomed them into her home with a huge smile, snacks, hugs, bottomless cups of coffee, and delicious Czech meals and kept them entertained with all her stories. She also had an amazing garden behind her house which made it feel like you were instantly on a relaxing vacation. Mary Kaye was an amazing woman, and she will be greatly missed by so many.

    Mary K was one of the kindest, purest people I have ever known. She was a friend of everyone who ever met her. She will be sorely missed.

    So sorry to hear of your loss, Dustin. Your mom was a treasure. I always enjoyed talking with her whether we were enjoying music together, she was cutting my hair, or just visiting. She adored you so much! I will always cherish how generous and kind she was.

    I miss you everyday mom. Every morning when I texted you. Everyday after work when I called to catch up. Those are the specific times that bring me to the hardest tears.

    Your energy is still here.
