Mary Patricia “Pat” (O’Connell) Hess, 91, died in Barrington, IL, on June 7, 2019. Born in Grand Island, NE. Preceded in death by Harry H. Hess, husband of 64 years; son, Scott F. Hess; mother, Mary Ione Thiemann O’Connell of Grand Island and Omaha, NE; father, William Patrick O’Connell of Boston, MA and Grand Island; sister, Marianna “Billie” Heaney, Omaha; brother-in-law, Dr. Frederick “Tom” Langdon, Omaha; mother-in-law, Josephine O’Grady Hess, Omaha and Falls City, NE; sister-in-law, Mary Bowman, nephew, William Bowman and niece, Bonita Bowman, Baltimore, MD.

Graduate of North High School and Duchesne College.  Member of National Honor Society, vocalist and pianist in numerous high school and college productions and weddings.  English teacher, Ravenna High School 1949-1950.  Christ the King Church Chorus and Guild member, parishioner 1964-2016.

Known for her prize-winning residential garden, she was active in various creative endeavors in the Omaha area, including art, garden groups and fundraising events.  Past president of Bergan Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.

Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Ellyn Kathleen Hess Zaia and John V. Zaia, Halifax, PA, and daughter, Gretchen Hess, Chicago, IL; son, John Cary Hess; daughter-in-law, Melody Brittenham Hess; grandchildren, Cary and Allison Hess, Houston, TX; sister, Margaret E. Langdon, Omaha; brother-in-law, C.E. “Carr” Heaney, Jr., Omaha; nephews: John and Mark Langdon, Omaha, Fred Langdon, Cincinnati, OH, Michael Heaney, Mt. Vernon, IL, Thomas Heaney, Omaha, and Robert Bowman, Forest Hill, MD; niece, Ann Heaney, Palatine, IL.

The family thanks dedicated caregivers in Omaha and Chicago.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 13th from 5pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel, followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm.  MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Friday, June 14th at 10:30am at Christ the King Catholic Church, 654 S. 86th St.  Interment: Saturday, June 15th at 9:30am at Calvary Cemetery.

Donations are suggested to Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart or Sacred Heart School (CUES).

    Gretchen…Tim and I are so sorry to just learn of the passing of your lovely mother. She was extremely nice to us many years ago on our trip to the lake house in Fremont!
