Mary R. Krecek (Smestad)

May 31, 1946 – January 20, 2023

Mary R. Smestad was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on May 31, 1946, to Clinton and Ruth. She grew up in Kearney, Nebraska, where she graduated from Kearney High School in 1964. That year, Mary moved to Omaha to attend Clarkson College, graduating with an RN diploma in 1967.

On June 4, 1969, Mary married John Krecek at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Mary was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a wonderful cook, baker, and homemaker, as well as an avid quilter and quilt collector. Mary was a supporter of the International Quilt Studies Museum and the Vesterheim Museum. She enjoyed traveling to many places throughout her life. She especially enjoyed long weekend trips with her husband to nearby places and short weekend drives.

She was preceded in death by parents, Clinton and Ruth Smestad. She is survived by husband, John; daughters, Elizabeth (Libby) Krecek and Wendy Castillo; grandson, Kennis Castillo; brother, Sam (Julie) Smestad; brother-in-law, Dave (Vicki) Krecek; Sister-in-law, Rosie (Bruce) Brown.
