Matthew A. Carroll
June 7, 1966 – August 22, 2024
Mathew Carroll, aged 58, passed away unexpectedly on August 22, 2024, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Born on June 7, 1966, in Omaha, Matt dedicated many years of his life as a compassionate Paramedic with the Omaha Fire Department, where he retired from in January. Matt was recognized for his commitment and service, notably during an active shooting incident, and also a touching gesture with a fellow Paramedic to replace a stolen bicycle for a young girl in 2017. Matt never saw himself as a hero, he would be the first to tell you that he is simply a working man who gets paid to do a job like everyone else, it just happens to be for the Fire Department.
Matt was a devout Catholic, whose life was guided by his faith. He was a family-oriented man, who loved his extensive family. He was known for his supportive nature, especially towards his nieces, nephews, and many cousins. You could always find Matt at family events, where he’d be quick to tell you a funny story that mostly poked fun at himself. He found humor in everyday life and welcomed a good debate. Matt was deeply loved by his family. He is survived by his mother, Polly Carroll; siblings: John (and Lauren) Carroll, Mary Carroll, Joe Carroll, and sister-in-law, Cindy Carroll; as well as his nieces and nephews: Erin, John Major (Tank), Justin, Tommy, Emily Donahue, Marcus (and Nikol), Uriah, Abigail, Leah (and Matthew) Sevaaetasi, Isaiah, Elizabeth (and Kyle) Jelinek, Hannah (and Kyle) White, Isaac, Faith, Anna, Joshua, and Gabriel Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Carroll; and his brother, Mark Carroll. Mathew’s legacy is carried forward not only through his family but also through the countless lives he touched with his kindness and compassion.
His life exemplifies a commitment to service and community, deeply rooted in love and faith.

Rest in peace, Uncle Matt. We love you always.
You were always a great asset on the department, a good friend, and am honorable man. We shall miss you, brother.
I was so shocked to hear this news. I worked with Matt on the fire department and in later years his Paramedic Shift Supervisor. He was a good medic, always stayed calm in stressful situations. He never complained and I could always count on him. He will be missed. Rest in peace Matt!
We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Matt. He was a very humble man and a great neighbor. One of my best memories of Matt, is when we were at my mother in law’s house (now our home) and he’d come visit with us on the front deck. He was always a nice guy. We are all so grateful for his service to community, family & friends. God bless Matt. God bless all who love him and are healing from his absence.
I worked with Matt on OFD. He was a very kind man and I am so sad to hear of his untimely passing. He undoubtedly saved lives and showed up to help those in need forever changing outcomes from despair to survival for so many individuals and their loved ones in our community. Rest in Peace, Matt.
Matt, or we all knew him as Mal (pronounced like Paul), was one of my first close friends in HS. We had freshman homeroom together and became instant friends. After High School we played volleyball, softball, live together for a couple years, worked at UPS together and he was part of my wedding party. I’ve never met anybody with such a big heart he will definitely be missed.

Matt was a close friend of my dad, JC, and he was always so kind and supportive to our family. We are deeply shocked and saddened by his passing. He was a kind soul and a good person who left this world far too soon.
I was one of Matt’s OFD Training Officers in 2004. Good student and always good reports from his Field Training Officers. He will be missed by his immediate family and the OFD Family. Rest in peace until we meet again.
So very sorry to hear about Matt, he was an amazing person and neighbor. Always willing to help out with anything and his stories were the best! He was always there for my family and especially my Mom. You will be missed Matt!! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
Childhood friends create a bond unlike so many others and Matt and I became friends in grade school. It was easy to be Matt’s friend because he genuinely cared about others. We played ball in the summer, went sledding in the winter, and spent countless days in the field behind our houses. Though our lives moved apart as we got older, he will always be my first best friend.
I had the pleasure of first meeting Matt at 24 Hour Fitness. I was a trainer there and we first met with him asking me a few questions about a knee issue he was having. I showed him some exercises and helped him with a few workout ideas. We soon hit it off and I was fortunate to start a great friendship.
He had made several comments about me trying out for the Fire Dept. I told him I had tried out years ago and I actually wanted the job but life had different plans. Matt being that stern no nonsense kind of guy slapped me in the shoulder and said what do you have to loose!
I’ve been on the job almost twelve years now and sadly me being on a different shift I wasn’t in contact with Matt as much as I wish I would have been.
He was such an inspirational person in motivating me to get into the Fire Service and it saddens me that he isn’t with us anymore. My condolences to his family and all the other friends that knew him well!

So sorry for your unexpected loss. Matt and I have known each other since little league football, I’ll always remember Matt as a fair hardworking person who always had your back. During High School he helped us win countless games in the trenches on the line where he showcased his strength and determination. I worked with him years later on the Omaha Fire Department where he became a solid and trustworthy medic who always had a smile on for the patient and his co workers. He was a heck of a good man and he’ll be missed by many who crossed paths with him. I’ll miss you old fried. You left us too soon
Matt Carroll is an amazing human being who positively impacted all he encountered. I have known Matt for 50 years as he and I became the best of friends in 2nd grade at Holy Ghost. We were teammates and classmates through elementary and high school. Matt was like a brother to me. Matt was a person of integrity and character- Matt gave me a call this spring- he wanted my parents’ contact information. My dad had recently been placed on hospice and he wanted to see me dad. Matt took time to visit my father this past May to thank him for being a positive influence in his life. That meant the world to my dad and our family. Vince Lombardi said, “Excellence can be obtained if you care more than others think is wise; risk more than others think is safe; dream more than others think is practical; and expect more than others think is possible.” Matthew Allen Carroll definitely achieved EXCELLENCE throughout his life and we are better people for it!
