Maurece Shirley (Johnson) Engelbart

March 5, 1926 – July 2, 2024

Maurece Shirley Johnson was born at home in Ceresco, Nebraska to David T. and Orrie Wedberg Johnson on March 5, 1926.  She graduated from Ceresco High School and attended Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska, for two years.  She graduated in 1947 from University of Nebraska in Lincoln with a teaching degree in Mathematics and a minor in Spanish.  Maurece married Leon Engelbart on August 9th the same year and moved to Ainsworth, Nebraska, where they both began their teaching careers.

In 1951 Maurece and Leon moved to Omaha and started their family.  Maurece later taught and substituted in the Westside School District.  In 1971, Maurece and Leon moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, where Maurece taught at Fairfield Junior School.  In 1976 they made their home in Norfolk, Nebraska and retired there years later.  Maurece was involved in organizations such as Garden Club, Questors, Meals on Wheels, and church organizations.  After losing her husband in 2008, Maurece moved to Lakeside Retirement Village in Omaha and eventually resided in Brookstone Village.

Maurece was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Kathleen Swanson; and brother, Jim Johnson.  She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Kristy and Maury Damkroger, Kelli and Eric Rolfsmeyer, and Pam and Kirk Engelbart; seven grandchildren and their partners: Andy Damkroger (Jaime), Alison Damkroger (Nate), Libby Johnson (Andrew), Emily Carver (Todd), Kate Sutton (Adam), Grant Engelbart (Jessica), and Brett Engelbart (Nicole); thirteen great-grandchildren; two cousins: Darleen Marolf (Waverly, NE) and Sharon Johnson (Norfolk, NE).

    Maurece was such a “sage” inour Quester group. I loved her and hated she moved since I missed her presence in Questers…so grounded snd wise and “open” to new ideas, active and interested. She was someone I always respected and admired and hoped to be like her “someday.” I loved and admired her decorative way she displayed her antiques. I will not forget her. I know she and Leon are “togethet” now. I am happy for you, Maurece! You had a good “run.!”

    I about your mother’s death from a phone call from her cousin in Norfolk. I had called a few weeks previously and we had such a good visit. I had some health issues earlier jn the year so was neglectful for a time but we had such a good visit , like old times. I was trying to call a few days before hearing the news. I will miss her,
