Ada Belle McDermott Jan 2, 1922 – Feb 13, 2016 Ada Belle McDermott, age 94, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 13, 2016 surrounded by family and love. Raised a Nebraska farm girl in Steel City and Wilber, Ada later helped her mother manage the historic Wilber Hotel. Thereafter, Ada donated the hotel to the Nebraska Czechs of Wilber where it remains today as a museum and civic center. While an exemplary student at the University of Nebraska, Ada met and married her life-long sweetheart, Joe McDermott, in 1942. Together they had two sons, Michael and Patrick, followed by grandchildren: Megan, Larry, Carolyn, and Matthew, and great-grandchildren: Gabrielle, Grace, Jesse and Gannon. Ada supported and laughed with all her children. Ada was a schoolteacher at Christ the King Parish, while Michael and Patrick mowed neighborhood lawns, helping support the family while Joe was ill. In the early 1960s, Joe and Ada started Loveland Lawns selling grass seed and fertilizer out of their garage in the little green house at 9816 F Street in Omaha, NE. Twenty years later, the Loveland Warehouse was the largest distributor of lawn and garden product west of Chicago. Ada worked as administrator, bookkeeper and organizer, complementing Joes salesmanship. A devout Catholic, Ada was a force in parish activities at St. Cecilias, St. Margaret Marys, Christ the King, Mary Our Queen and St. Geralds in Omaha. She supported the Good Shepherd Sisters of Omaha and the Notre Dame Sisters of Omaha and Wilber, NE, honoring her sister Angeline of the order. She was a benefactor and Oblate supporting Mount Michael Benedictine Abbey from its early days. Ada’s faith has been a constant source of strength and generosity in her life. Her son, Patrick McDermott, cared for Ada during her last years. With walks in the park and healthy meals, he lovingly tended her needs. The family is grateful to all those who faithfully ministered to Ada at home including Millie, Patty, St. Geralds Eucharistic ministers and many Loveland Grass Pad staff. Ada was loved and will always be remembered. Her legacy of faith, generosity and hard work is a living gift that we are grateful to inherit and pass on to future generations. Ada was preceded in death by her husband, Joe McDermott; her sisters, Angeline Barta and Dorothy Applegate; brother, Daniel Barta. She is survived by her sister, Eunice Kuhns; brothers, Eugene Barta and Clair Barta; two sons, Patrick and Michael (Betty); grandchildren: Megan (Robert), Larry (Lindsay), Carolyn (Patrick) and Matthew (Sophia); great-grandchildren: Gabrielle, Grace, Jesse and Gannon. We are grateful and confident that Ada has been welcomed home by her loving God, her family and Joe, and all the angels and saints, who are now with her celebrating a life well lived. Please join us in celebration and thanksgiving for her life. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb. 16th at St. Gerald Catholic Church, 9602 Q St., from 5pm to 7pm, with VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm at the church. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Wednesday, Feb. 17th at 10am at St. Gerald Catholic Church with a luncheon to follow. All are welcome. Interment, Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Mount Michael or Sisters of Notre Dame.
