MEARES, Spyridon Frank

Spyridon Frank Meares September 26, 1932 – June 5, 2015 The third son born to Greek immigrants Frank C. and Pota Meares, he was the youngest person, age 16, in his South High graduating class. Stints as counterman, fry cook, laundry worker, and bread truck route man followed with two years at Creighton University. After the first semester at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox seminary in Brookline, MA, he was promoted one year, following which he served in the US Army at G2 Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. Returning to Creighton, he completed his BS in one year and entered law school on the GI Bill, graduating in 1961 with two minor awards. Frank was hired as Deputy Adams County Attorney where he served until he took a position with an Omaha lawyer, becoming lead trial defense counsel for insurance companies for more than five years. He opened his own solo law firm on May 1, 1968 and practiced litigation, personal injury, real estate, contract law, domestic relations, and criminal law as a sole practitioner lawyer in Nebraska and Iowa courts thereafter until he closed his office in 2014. In 1999 he became the oldest person, age 67, to take and pass the bar examination and be admitted to the bar in Rhode Island, where he and his wife had earlier established a second home in Newport, RI. Twice president of St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church in Omaha, he wrote the Centennial History of St. John’s Greek Orthodox Parish. His parents and two brothers, Demetrios and Constantine, predeceased him. His is survived by his Massachusetts born wife, Maria, and three children: Anastasia Goodman, Melissa Solomos, and Demetrios Meares. Six grandchildren survive him: Nebraskans Alexander Goodman and Zachary Goodman, Virginians Demetrios Solomos and Lukas Solomos, and New Yorkers Izadora Meares and Spyridon T. Meares. The family will receive friends Monday, June 8th from 6pm to 7pm, with TRISAGION (Prayer Service) at 7pm, all at the West Center Chapel. SERVICES Tuesday, June 9th at 10:30am at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 602 Park Ave. Interment, Evergreen Memorial Park. Memorials are suggested to St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.
