Melissa Ann Gibbons

Melissa Ann Gibbons

September 10, 1968 – August 26, 2022

Melissa Ann Gibbons was born September 10, 1968, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She was the first child of Valerie Voegele and Lawrence Bodin. Due to her father’s Navy career, they often moved cities throughout her primary school years. In 1986, Melissa graduated high school from Millard South High School in Millard, Nebraska.

Melissa then followed in her mother’s (Valerie) footsteps and chose to study nursing. Over the next 26 years, Melissa held many titles and roles within her chosen discipline, however what she truly enjoyed was helping people.  She took pride in her role as a source of comfort and healing for all of her patients.

In her free time, Melissa enjoyed reading and watching anything within the science fiction and fantasy genres. In particular, she loved Star Wars, Star Trek, and the Game of Thrones series. She loved to spend as much time with her family as she could, and valued time spent with her children more than anything.

On September 10, 2014, her husband, Bret Lee Gibbons passed away. Melissa was devastated and vowed to dedicate what remained of her life to her children, particularly her then 3-year-old daughter, Jamie Lee Gibbons. Melissa carried on without fear and met every challenge head on. This period made it clear that what she valued most was the safety, comfort, and happiness of her children. Melissa was selfless, often to a detriment, and would readily sacrifice her own comfort for others.

She is survived by her daughter, Jamie Lee Gibbons; son, Michael Doeden (Amy Queck); mother, Valerie Voegele; father, Lawrence Bodin (Hope Jamerson); brother, Larry Bearking (Cristina Jo Thaut) and their children; sister, Jessica Voegele (Jimmy McNeil) and their children; father-in-law, Terry (Sandie) Gibbons; sister-in-law, Machele Goetz and her children; sister-in-law, Kimberele (Joe) Bolin and their children.

Melissa will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family of Melissa Gibbons wishes to express their gratitude for all acts of kindness shown to them in their time of sorrow including the staff, EMTs, nurses, and physicians in the CHI Healthcare system.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Friday, September 2, 2022, 1:00 p.m. West Center Chapel.
