Merlin Dean Loberg

Merlin Dean Loberg

March 5, 1964 – September 3, 2023

Merlin Dean Loberg was born on March 5, 1964 in Laurel, NE to Vernon and Beverly Loberg.  He graduated from Randolph High School in 1982 and received his degree from Wayne State College in 1988.

On November 26, 1993 Merlin was united in marriage to Angela Hatten.   To this union they were blessed with two sons, Jacob and Matthew.  Their early married years were spent in Sioux City IA, where Merlin worked for the West Monona and Woodbury Central Schools as a teacher and coach.  He then began to work for Bekins Distribution until 2004.  The family then moved to Omaha, where Merlin worked at Craftware Pottery, Q&H Honey, Legacy Homes and D.R. Horton, where the people he worked with became lifelong friends.

Merlin was happiest when he was with his family and friends, especially doing anything sports related.  He coached his boys in multiple sports throughout their youth, and could be found supporting any friend or relative participating in their activities. Merlin enjoyed Husker football and tailgates, playing cards, fishing, Friday night poker and spending time with his bestest buddy Gunter.  He holds the household record for the lowest score in Five Crowns.   Merlin had a huge heart and was often found helping others in need.  A true testament to his kind and caring nature was evident by the stream of family and friends that came to say goodbye to him in his final days.

Merlin passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023, surrounded by his family, after a courageous one year battle with cancer that he fought with a positive attitude, without complaint, always protecting his family.  Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 29 years, Angie; two sons, Jacob and his wife Nicole, and Matthew and his fiancé Emma Ourada.  Also left to remember Merlin are his siblings, Paul (Julie) Loberg of Randolph NE; Loren (Tammi) Loberg of Norfolk NE; Verlene (Jerry) Synovec of Randolph NE; Keith (Diane) Loberg of Randolph NE; Daryl (Julie) Loberg of North Bend NE; Arlyn Loberg of Randolph NE; Darin (Jackie) Loberg of Randolph NE; Steve (Wendy) Loberg of Omaha NE; Jason (Sara) Loberg of Omaha NE.  In addition, he is survived by his sisters-in-law Julie Loberg of Randolph NE, Lisa (Kevin) Krukow of Iowa Falls IA, Julie (Ed) Clark of Marshall MN, and Mari Beth (Jon) Ahart of Stewartville MN,  along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and 3 siblings Lester, Dale, and Vanessa; and in-laws John and Jo Hatten and Lori Buckley.

The shortness of his life and the family he has left behind makes this a tragic loss, but the lives he has impacted and the love he shared means it wasn’t all for nothing.

Merlin’s mantra during his cancer journey was “we will carry on until we can’t, and then we will let others carry us”.  Our family will do the same.

Family will receive friends, Wednesday, September 6, 2023 from 4:00PM – 7:00PM at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church (16701 S. Street) with a Vigil Service at 7PM.

Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, September 7th, 10:00AM at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church

Interment: Calvary
