What can I say ? My older brother Mark and I Grew up with Mike workingi in the Omaha Stockyards for my father Jim Smith , Cattle buyer . Mike although barely in his 20’s was the production side of Oneill Packing . He hired any South Omaha folks anyone that needed a job . Quite often even rehired them after they went looking for greener grass . He was the Godfather to many cattle people twice his age , teaching them the art of breaking and boxing beef . Some very very big names in Omaha learned the business from Mike and he never really ever got his just do , payment wise .. i will always cherish our stories together about the old days in the yards .. he taking care of his cow buyer Wild Bill Miljczki etc .. all of the Oneill family worked together in the Cudahay breaking plant and the shamrock kill floor … Above all a wonderful human being , God Speed my friend and I will look forward to seeing you again one day
My deepest sympathy to Fran and all of Michael’s family. I was a member of the girls’ softball team O’Neill Pack in the 70’s that he coached, and also his neighbor for a while. I so enjoyed time spent with Michael and cherish those memories of him and the team. May you find comfort in your memories and hold them close to your heart. RIP Michael.
Sorry for your loss Fran. Mike was a decent and nice guy to me!
I remember the good times at the house on 41st and Harney St. Prayers to your family.
Between my junior and senior year in high school 47 years ago Mike hired me to throw bones in the rendering truck! Mike always asked how I was doing and truly a great leader! After 2 summers of working at O’Neil Pack I was convinced to go back to school and someday own a business! I owe a lot to Mike and the people of O’Neil pack! When I saw the obit it brought back many memories! My condolences to the O’Neil family.– PL
Condolences from Grassland Beef. Mike treated me like a long time customer on the first introductory call I made in 2002 and I will never forget that. He really helped our struggling young company with answers to every question I had plus some fatherly advice on questions I should have been asking at the time. Mike rest in peace in the next chapter of your good soul. Thank you again for all you have meant to our business and me personally. ;
No words. Prayers for Fran, Brian, and the girls, spouses and grandkids. Been a while but never forgotten.
