Michael “Mike” LeRoy Newman
1954 – 2025
Michael LeRoy Newman, affectionately known as Mike, passed away on June 16, 2025, at the age of 70 in La Vista, Nebraska.
Mike was born December 19, 1954 to Richard and Joyce (McWilliams) Newman in Nagoya, Honshu, Japan where his father, a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force, was stationed. He graduated from Omaha Burke High School in 1974 and went on to complete his Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He then returned to Omaha where he married Rebecca Breed and started his family. Later on he completed his Master’s degree from University of Nebraska Omaha.
Mike dedicated over 40 years of his life to his work as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. After integrating his expertise in vocational rehabilitation with the Long Term Disability insurance industry in his role at Mutual of Omaha, he ran a successful private practice and developed a reputation regionally as a valuable resource for highly complex rehab cases. Mike was highly respected in the forensic vocational rehabilitation community, both for his work on cases and his excellent presentations at professional conferences. His professional achievements are a testament to his determination, intelligence, and compassion.
Outside of work, Mike was an avid golfer. He spent untold hours on the golf course, teaching his children the game, enjoying the company of his close friends, and relishing in the abundant challenges provided by the sport.
Mike cherished his role as a father, supporting his children in all their ambitions, attending countless practices, games, and performances. As his children started families of their own, Mike discovered the joys of grandchildren. His love for his family was deep and unwavering.
Mike is survived by his children: Stephen (Amanda Angle) Newman, Jeneva (Nathan) Timm, Chelsea (Daniel) Wilson, Joel (Chelsea) Newman, Luke Newman, and Andrew Newman; grandchildren: Millie, Nora, Preston, Ezra, and Garrett; siblings: Craig (Pam) Newman, Dale (Denise) Newman, and Laura Perlinger. He was preceded in death by his parents.
