Nancy Elaine (Roker) Armitage

Jun 29, 1946 – Feb 27, 2017

Age 70 years, of Omaha; passed away on Monday at her home in Omaha after a courageous battle with cancer. She spent her final days surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James O. Armitage; her children: Amy Gromowsky (Jeff), Greg Armitage (Cheryl), Anne Rogers (Steve), and Joel Armitage (Anja); her grandchildren: Matthew, Joshua, Clark, James, Grant, Charlie, Max, Lila, Annika, Alexis, and Abigail; sister, Lois Sackett (Jim). She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Reuben Roker and Emma Leila Duehn.

Nancy was born on June 29, 1946 in Kearney, Nebraska, where her father was minister of the Faith EUB Church. When Nancy was three years old, the family moved to Lincoln, where her father served as minister of Calvary EUB Church.  In 1962 the family returned to Kearney, where she met the love of her life and future husband, James Armitage. After graduation from Kearney High School, Nancy briefly attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, before earning her nursing degree from Bryan Nursing School in Lincoln. The couple were married by Nancy’s father on August 12, 1967, at Faith EUB Church in Kearney. Nancy worked as a nurse at the Lincoln Regional Center and then at the University of Nebraska Medical Center before becoming a full-time wife, mother, and grandmother. She volunteered extensively in the community, and was especially proud of her work with the Nature Conservancy of Nebraska.

Nancy’s love for life, sense of humor, and contagious laughter brought joy to those fortunate enough to know her. She was a lifelong fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Green Bay Packers. She cherished nature and all kinds of animals, but especially her cats. She traveled extensively with her husband, children, and grandchildren, including many trips to Africa, which became one of her favorite places on earth.

She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful neighbors and friends who helped and provided love and support in so many ways: her medical care team at Nebraska Medicine; the home health care and hospice teams; and, especially, her personal nurse and good friend, Beth Beninato.

MEMORIAL SERVICE Friday, March 3rd at 1:30pm. at Countryside Community Church, 8787 Pacific St. Rev. Chris Alexander and Rev. Robert Kem will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Nancy Armitage Pancreas Cancer Clinical Research Professorship Fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation; to The Nature Conservancy of Nebraska; or to Feline Friendz of Omaha.

I work at Walgreen’s on 90th and Center, where Nancy was a frequent customer. She was always kind and gracious, and it was a pleasure to see her come in the store to shop, I’ve missed her these months during her illness and I will continue to miss her and the fun chats we used to have. My sincere condolences.
