NEAL, Walter Ray “Salty”

Walter Ray “Salty” Neal Aug 13, 1932 – Mar 17, 2015 Survived by his wife of nearly sixty years, Beverly Jean “Bev” Neal; sons, Timothy R. Neal and Thomas D. Neal (Bridget); daughter, Nanci K. Deckert (Dan); cousin, Lynette Cullen; five grandchildren: Andrew Neal (Dani), Andrea Neal, Amanda Deckert, Shawn Deckert, and Matthew Deckert; one great-grandson, Titus “Ty” Neal. The family will receive friends Friday, March 20th, from 4pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel. SERVICES Saturday, March 21st at 1pm at the West Center Chapel. Interment, Hillcrest Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post #1. Memorials to Nebraska Kidney Association. Walt attended Benson High School and received an Associate’s Degree from Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri. A Korean War veteran, he served in the Searchlight Division in Germany. For many years he and his father owned and operated the Neal Tire Store, located—located at 26th and St. Mary Avenue, the store opened its doors in 1925. At one time Walt was a member of the Benson Masonic, Scottish Rite, and Tangier Shrine. He was Past President of the Downtown Optimist Club and Past President of the OEA (Omaha Executive Association). He was a Stephen Minister at Countryside Community Church, and also a member of American Legion Post #1. Walt received the President’s award from the Nebraska Kidney Association, and he was most proud to be named an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy (2012) for his 80th birthday!
