SCHMIEDING, Norma Jean Aug 20, 1934 Sep 2, 2013 Dr. Norma Jean Schmieding, age 79, passed away September 2, 2013 at Ridgewood Retirement Home in Bennington, NE. Jean was born August 20, 1934 in Gresham, Nebraska to Louis and Nora (Sieck) Schmieding. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth; 2 brothers, Wilbert Schmieding and wife Lorna, and Orville Schmieding; brothers-in-law, Alfred Richert and Les Schmidt; grandnephew, Jason Barrett. She is survived by 2 sisters, Verna Richert and Dolores Schmidt; brother, Art Schmieding and wife Jan; sister-in-law, Trudy Schmieding; numerous nephews and nieces as well as special friend, John Stockholm. Friends and family will remember Jean for her kind heart, generous spirit, dedication to her nursing profession, and great laugh. Dr. Schmieding graduated from Utica High School, Utica, NE in 1952 and received her nursing degree from Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln, NE; her BS degree from Wesleyan University in Lincoln, NE; and her Masters and Ph.D. in nursing from Boston University in Boston, MA. She worked at Mass. General Hospital in Boston and was Director of Nursing at Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln, NE and Boston City Hospital in Boston, MA. Jean taught graduate nurses, including many international students, at Case Western in Cleveland, Ohio, and also at the University of Rhode Island where she retired. She mentored and was beloved by many of her students. She wrote the book, “The Orlando Theory,” which discussed how nurses could take a more interactive role in patient care. A private family memorial service is planned at a later date.
