Norma Wanda Mayor

‘BETTER HALF’ OF DYNAMIC AKSARBEN COUPLE Norma Wanda Mayor, the ‘better half’ of one of Aksarben’s dynamic couples, died on January 12, 2011 .Sonny and Norma were elected to the Nebraska Racing Hall of Fame in 1994. Norma and Sonny Mayor, whose life was celebrated at All Saints Episcopal Church, Omaha, Nebraska, on June 13, 2006, were married for 63 years. Those in horsing circles, and at Happy Hollow Country Club, loved them both. And, all knew who was the best at picking winners! If the saying, “behind every successful man stands a strong woman,” was ever true, it was true for Norma. In her younger years, she skated in the Ice Capades with strength and grace. She raised her first born, Tuffy, for two years while Sonny was at war, then, when he returned, they began their magical life together, enjoying eight adoring grandchildren, Tiffany, Bridgid, Shane, Simia, Heath, Dylan, Savannah and Madison, All these happy, successful offspring believe that she was the best-possible role model. After Sonny’s death, Norma moved to Bozeman, Montana to be close to her daughter, Marcy Mayor Ramsay. Marcy and her daughter, Simia, both nurses, looked after Norma, as she struggled with Alzheimer’s. Norma lived at Aspen Point, a wonderful place where she taught her neighbors to paint and win at Bingo. Also, she had her grandson, Shane, Simia, her husband, Danny, son-in-law Scott and great grandson, Rio, to keep her smiling and active. Her years after Sonny were happy and peaceful. She died the same way. Norma was raised in Wichita, Kansas, one of two daughters of William and Freda Halb, immigrants from Graz, Austria. Bill was a professional tailor. Norma’s other daughter, Lori, continues that tradition, as owner of L O’Neil Design. She lives in Santa Rosa, Ca. with her family. Both Marcy and Lori attended high school in Omaha. Norma’s sister, Sylvia Wigington, lives in Rogers, Ark. Her son, Tuffy and his wife, Sam, live in Kansas City. Sonny and Tuffy were in business together in Omaha, once upon a time. Norma’s life will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 10, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 9302 Blondo in Omaha. Lunch will be served after the service. To keep Norma’s art teaching in place, in lieu of other donations the family has established a Norma W Mayor Arts Fund, Hillcrest Arts Program, c/o Bozeman Deaconess Foundation, 931 Highland Blvd, Suite #3200, Bozeman, Mt, 59715.
