Opal Mae Harper

HARPER, Opal Mae, age 94 years, of Omaha, NE, died Saturday, April 11, 2009. Born in Newport, AR on April 24, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Elbert Henry Harper and Anna Leunor Ladd Harper of Newport. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters: Hazel Ruby Harper, Bessie Emerald Harper, and Anna Pearl Harper Zorgias; brother-in-law, Emanuel Zorgias; and a nephew, James E. Zorgias, the latter three of Columbia, SC. She is survived by daughter, Mary O. McCartney Olson McCully (Robert W.) of Bamberg, SC; son, Joe T. McCartney (Juanita Jo) of Omaha; 3 grandchildren: Mary Ann Olson Jaworski (Euegne G.), Kathleen Mary McCartney Schneider (Mark), Thomas J. McCartney (Mary Elizabeth); seven great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Theodor E. Zorgias. During her working years she was employed by J. L. Brandeis and Sons of Omaha as a credit manager; by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the Illikai Hotel and Marina Properties in Honolulu, HI. She continued to work independently in property management and real estate during retirement in Honolulu prior to her return to Omaha to live at Skyline Villa. She enjoyed traveling and throughout her life visited several major cities in Asia, Europe, and North America. A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, she attended St. Paul’s in Newport, Trinity Cathedral and All Saints in Omaha, and St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Honolulu at various times. FUNERAL SERVICES will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 17th, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newport, with the Rev. J. Russell Snapp officiating. VISITATION will be in St. Paul’s Parish Hall prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 367, Newport, AR 72112.
