Paul G. Saathoff
July 20, 1949 – September 6, 2024
Paul G. Saathoff was born in Rushville, Kansas, on July 20, 1949, to Raymond and Jean Saathoff, and grew up around the United States and the World, traveling with his father, who was a Chaplin in the United State’s Air Force. Paul graduated from Rome High School in Rome, New York in 1967. On June 6, 1970, he married Ethel Maude Sidebottom in Blair, Nebraska. Paul and Ethel had one child, Matthew P. Saathoff, born in 1977. Paul graduated from Dana College in 1972 and then obtained his MBA from UNO in 1974.
After college, Paul started to work at First Federal Lincoln in its Management Trainee Program and progressed through the ranks. After working at First Federal Lincoln, he started a Mortgage Company for NP Dodge Real Estate. He retired from Lincoln Federal Saving Bank after a lengthy career in banking and mortgage lending. Paul had a great passion for helping people make their financial dreams come true. It brought him great joy to be able to assist people purchase their dream homes.
He loved spending time with friends and family over coffee, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Almost every meal that he ate was with a different group of friends, but on a strict schedule. He was not sure how to cook his own meals, as Ethel and Joyce took such great care of him, so he would eat with friends and family.
He was heavily involved in Alcoholics Anonymous and very proud of his over 30 years of sobriety. He enjoyed sponsoring other people and helping others maintain their sobriety. His phone was always on, and he was always willing to talk to anyone. He also enjoyed volunteering his time and knowledge to the Siena Francis House, The Arch, and Heart Ministry Center. He was a devoted member of the Lutheran Church of the Master and would regularly attend the Saturday evening services.
Paul also liked to volunteer his free time at the Omaha Community Playhouse and other non-profit organizations in the area. He enjoyed going to watch plays at the Omaha Community Playhouse and it was a family tradition to go annually to the Christmas Carol. He enjoyed traveling and seeing different parts of the United States with his family and friends.
He enjoyed attending his grandson’s baseball and basketball games, and granddaughter’s softball and cheer competitions. He liked to talk with his grandchildren about their activities, school, and sporting events. He took Blaine Roberts (Joyce’s grandson) under his wing and helped mentor, and was a grandfather figure in his life.
He is survived by his son, Matthew P. Saathoff, and daughter-in-law Cathy R. Saathoff; grandson, Jamison D. Saathoff; granddaughter, Madysen P. Saathoff; sister, Ruth Madden; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Laaker and Edith Satterfield; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Saathoff; parents, Raymond and Jean Saathoff; Ethel’s parents, DL and Edith Sidebottom; brother and sister-in-law, Bud and Margie Sidebottom, Raymond Satterfield, and Denny Laaker.
VISITATION: Thursday, September 19, 2024, from 5:00 – 8:00PM at West Center Chapel, 7805 West Center Road, Omaha, 68124.
FUNERAL SERVICE: Friday, September 20, 2024, at 10:30AM at Lutheran Church of the Master, East Campus, 2617 S. 114th Street, Omaha.
INTERMENT: Evergreen Memorial Park
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Arch or to the Heart Ministry Center.
