Paul Joseph White was born May 14, 1934, to Harold and Florence White in Omaha, NE.  He was the oldest of five siblings including Patricia, Delores, Dan and Mary.  He graduated from Technical High School in 1953 and attended Omaha University until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in September 1956.

Paul attended basic training at Ft. Hood, Texas and then was stationed at Ft. Eustis, Virginia where he was assigned to the 774th Engineer Detachment and worked on the drafting board helping design the bases roadways and bridges.

After his service was complete, he returned to Omaha and worked as a draftsman for Henningson, Durham & Richardson Engineer and Architect.  This led to him branching out on his own and started Paul J. White Construction Company in partnership with his father, Harold.

In 1959, Paul met the love of his life, Beverly Stahurski, and they were married May 26, 1962, at Immaculate Conception Church.  They had three children: Scott, Michael, and Kay.

Paul began ice skating at Aksarben Ice Rink as a young boy and pursued his love of playing hockey well into his 50’s.  He was a founding member of Omaha Metropolitan Amateur Hockey Association (O.M.A.H.A) and played several professional hockey games as a stand-in goalie for the Omaha Knights and St. Paul Saints, Jacques Marcotte.

Paul was also an avid fan of playing golf and joined St. Robert’s men’s golf league in the late 1970’s and played until COVID hit in 2020.  Although he didn’t have the best average, he claimed he could talk the golf out of most players beating them with his handicap.  Another hobby of his was old time cowboy shooting with Nebraska Territorial Rangers Shooting Club.  He loved to go shooting with his brother-in-law, Larry Pallat, and good friend, Mil Sartin. Many autumn weekends were spent shooting original and replica era old west firearms at steel targets in the woods near Logan, Iowa.

Paul enjoyed many activities, but he was most fond of his association with the Knights of Columbus, Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta ASM 2541, St. Robert Bellarmine Parish.  He spent many hours volunteering to cook and serve meals for parish fundraisers which is funny because he never cooked a meal at home, he left that chore to his beloved wife, Bev.

Paul lost both of his parents and two younger sisters, Patty and Dee, to Alzheimer’s.  Paul started to show signs of slowing down the last couple of months of his life but was up and running when he turned 91 on May 14.  Paul was well liked at the assisted living facility where he resided in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he joyfully talked about his hockey playing days and Army career.  He recounted his many building accomplishments in Omaha and spoke lovingly of his family and friends back home.

Paul will be remembered by his many friends and family; we are blessed we were able to call him our dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; and her parents, Ralph & Ann Stahurski; his parents, Harold and Florence White; sisters, Patricia “Patty” Allis, Delores “Dee” Schmit; brother-in-law, PJ Schmit; nephews, Tom Schmit and Rick Allis.  He is survived by his children: Scott (Kris) White, Michael White, Kay (Sam) Vasquez; brother and sister, Dan White and Mary (Kevin) Greteman; sister-in-law, Donna (Larry) Pallat; grandchildren: Melissa (Eric) Miller, Jeff White, Jessica Vasquez, Joshua (Ariana) Vasquez, and Joseph Vasquez; great-grandchildren: Skylar and Ayden Miller, Addilynn and Landon White; many nieces and nephews.

I was saddened to learn of Paul’s passing and I appreciated reading about his rich and full life. I was blessed to know Paul through the Knights and especially the Grandfriends group at St. Robert’s. I remember what a raconteur he was, trading quips and zingers and always enlivening the events with his stories. I remember he would sometimes appear looking downright dapper in a suit. It was to honor his late wife on a significant day, a testimony to his undying love. And I remember at Knights meetings we’d all pass Paul our can tabs, certain he was forwarding some worthy cause with them. Many good memories of a good man. May the Lord keep a comforting hand on all who knew and loved him (and that number is legion).

My sincere condolences for the loss of Brother, SK Paul White. I will always remember cooking with Paul at the Priest appreciation cook outs at Mount Michael’s, working over the hot coal grills, we nicknamed him ” Sarge” in all respect! His cooking skills will be remembered. May we pray for Paul and Bev and their Family at this time. Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta ASM 2541, St. Robert Bellarmine Parish.
